Menopause hormone therapy prescribing in ambulatory care visits among midlife and older U.S. women from 2018 to 2019
Menopause hormone therapy (HT) is indicated for the treatment of vasomotor symptoms of menopause, premature menopause, genitourinary syndrome of menopause, and prevention of osteoporosis [1]. After the 2002 Women's Health Initiative (WHI) study results were published, HT prescribing rates plummeted 66  % amidst fears of cardiovascular disease, venous thromboembolism, and breast cancer [2]. In 2009–2010, the prevalence of HT use was 4.7 %, decreased from 22.4 % in 1999–2000 [3]. Almost no recent studies have reported HT prescribing rates in representative patient samples in the U.S. (Source: Maturitas)

Efficacy and safety of tofacitinib for chronic plaque psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
ConclusionsA comprehensive analysis revealed that tofacitinib has a positive effect on addressing skin and joint symptoms, as well as improving the quality of life for patients with chronic plaque psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis (PsA). However, the safety of the drug ’s long-term usage even requires further validation.Key Points• In 6 analyses involving a total of 1393 patients, tofacitinib exhibits positive effect on the treatment of both chronic plaque psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis (PsA).• Although dose-based subgroup analyses have demonstrated effectiveness. Some studies indicate that the 5-mg dose (twice da...

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1517: Long-Term Intake of Proton-Pump Inhibitors Could Be Associated with an Increased Incidence of Liver Cancer in Women
Conclusions: Our data suggest that long-term PPI intake in women as well as in patients < 60 years might be associated with an increased risk of liver cancer. These findings support current efforts to reduce the inappropriate use of PPIs in routine clinical practice and to link PPI prescribing to a clear medical indication. (Source: Cancers)

Regulatory Effect of Osteocytes on Extramedullary and Bone Marrow Adipose Tissue Development and Function
AbstractPurpose of ReviewThis review summarizes evidence on osteocyte support of extramedullary and bone marrow adipocyte development and discusses the role of endogenous osteocyte activities of nuclear receptors peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARG) and alpha (PPARA) in this support.Recent FindingsPPARG and PPARA proteins, key regulators of glucose and fatty acid metabolism, are highly expressed in osteocytes. They play significant roles in the regulation of osteocyte secretome and osteocyte bioenergetics; both activities contributing to the levels of systemic energy metabolism in part through an effect...

Mediterranean diet in the targeted prevention and personalized treatment of chronic diseases: evidence, potential mechanisms, and prospects
AbstractThe prevalence of chronic diseases is currently a major public health issue worldwide and is exploding with the population growth and aging. Dietary patterns are well known to play a important role in our overall health and well-being, and therefore, poor diet and malnutrition are among the most critical risk factors for chronic disease. Thus, dietary recommendation and nutritional supplementation have significant clinical implications for the targeted treatment of some of these diseases. Multiple dietary patterns have been proposed to prevent chronic disease incidence, like Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension ...

Assessing osteoporosis in postmenopausal women: preliminary results using a novel lumbar spine phantom-based MRI scoring method
ConclusionA novel real-time lumber spine MRI phantom was developed, based upon which newly definedF-score andW-score were able to detect osteoporosis and demonstrated an improved ability over DXA-aBMD in differentiating patients with vertebral fractures. (Source: La Radiologia Medica)

Clinical features, treatment, and follow-up of OPPG and high-bone-mass disorders: LRP5 is a key regulator of bone mass
ConclusionThis study deepened the understanding of the clinical characteristics, treatment, and follow-up of OPPG and LRP5-HBM; expanded the pathogenic gene spectrum of OPPG; and confirmed that bisphosphonates were effective for OPPG. Additionally, it was found that Ala242Thr mutation could not protect LRP5-HBM patients from age-related bone loss. This phenomenon deserves further study. (Source: Osteoporosis International)

Rheumatology: What You May Have Missed in 2023
Ann Intern Med. 2024 Apr 16. doi: 10.7326/M24-0678. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMany patients with rheumatologic conditions receive care from physicians other than rheumatologists. Here we note key findings from 6 studies in rheumatology published in 2023 that offer valuable insights for internal medicine specialists and subspecialists outside of rheumatology. The first study investigated the effect of low-dose glucocorticoids on patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) over 2 years and challenged existing perceptions about the risks of glucocorticoids in this setting. The second study focused on the updated guideline for...

Conditioned medium of human mesenchymal stem cells affects stem cell senescence in osteoporosis
In this study, we aimed to compare the effects of conditioned medium (hMSCs-CM) from early and late passage hMSCs on cellular senescence and to verify the benefits of CM from early passage hMSCs in mitigating the progression of osteoporosis through the prevention of cellular senescence. We investigated the distinct endocrine effects of early (P5) and late (P17) passage hMSCs in vitro, as well as the preventive benefits of early passage hMSCs-CM in osteoporosis model triggered by ovariectomy. Our results indicate that long-term cultured hMSCs contributed to the progression of inflammatory transcriptional programs in P5 hMSC...
