Circulating oxidized LDL, increased in patients with acute myocardial infarction, is accompanied by heavily modified HDL [Research Articles]
This study aimed to reveal structural features of oxLDL present in human circulation related to atherosclerosis. When LDL was fractionated on an anion-exchange column, in vivo-oxLDL, detected by the anti-oxidized PC (oxPC) mAb, was recovered in flow-through and electronegative LDL [LDL(–)] fractions. The amount of the electronegative in vivo-oxLDL, namely oxLDL in the LDL(–) fraction, present in patients with acute MI was 3-fold higher than that observed in healthy subjects. Surprisingly, the LDL(–) fraction contained apoA1 in addition to apoB, and HDL-sized particles were observed with transmission elect...

Anne Marie Treisman (1937-2018).
Abstract Memorializes Anne Marie Treisman (1937-2018). Her 1962 dissertation at Oxford University included a remarkable 14 experiments and yielded 11 publications. This impressive body of work convinced Donald Broadbent and others to accept Anne's revised theory of attention in which unattended information was attenuated but not blocked. Many of the experiments rapidly made their way into textbooks and into the classroom. Although her work on attention and feature integration is best known, Anne's other contributions were prolific, insightful, and broad. Throughout her career, Anne was showered with awards...

Two Threats to Precision Medicine Equity.
Authors: Matthew DB Abstract In January 2015, President Barack Obama unveiled the "Precision Medicine Initiative," a nationwide research effort to help bring an effective, preventive, and therapeutic approach to medicine. The purpose of the initiative is to bring a precise understanding of the genetic and environmental determinants of disease into clinical settings across the United States.1 The announcement was coupled with $216 million provided in the President's proposed budget for a million-person national research cohort including public and private partnerships with academic medical centers, research...

The Stock Epinephrine Law - 5 Years Later and Counting
The School Access to Emergency Epinephrine Act was signed into law by President Obama on November 13, 2013 with bipartisan support (Public Law 113-48). The law amended the Public Health Service Act to increase the preference given to certain asthma-related grants in states that allow trained school personnel to administer epinephrine and maintain a stock epinephrine supply to treat suspected anaphylaxis. To qualify, states are also required to provide civil liability protection to trained staff acting in good faith at the elementary and secondary levels. Honeymoon or hangover? How election outcomes produce emotional shifts to winning candidate smiles
This study examines changes in self-reported happiness, anger, and distress to different smile types expressed by Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, measured immediately prior to and again following the 2012 presidential election. A panel of online respondents (N = 214) were shown four video clips featuring different smile types from each candidate before and after the election. Changes in Insurance Coverage and Access to Care for Young Adults in 2017
Previous work has demonstrated the Affordable Care Act (ACA) increased young adults' health care access during its first years. However, it is unclear if these trends continued through 2017; recent policies enacted by the Trump administration may have decreased the ACA's effectiveness. Our purpose was to determine changes in young adults' health care access during the transition from Obama to Trump administrations. (Source: Journal of Adolescent Health)
