Assessing U.S. Racial and Gender Differences in Happiness, 1972 –2016: An Intersectional Approach
This study assesses trends and differentials in happiness among the U.S. population. Using data from the General Social Survey, 1972 –2016 and the intersectionality paradigm to guide this work, I find that happiness differentials across gender and race are generally converging; however, patterns are quite complex and contingent on group membership (i.e. gender, race). Black women for instance, present a consistent pattern of im provement in happiness across decades, while White women display a persistent pattern of decline. In contrast, Black men experienced a discernable pattern of improvement in happiness between the 1...

Precision Medicine in Resistant Tuberculosis: Treat the correct patient, at the correct time, with the correct drug
Human genomic mapping has advanced molecular medicine health care and created a transformative paradigm shift towards Precision Medicine. In 2015, President Obama launched the PM initiative, encapsulated as "unique individualized data-driven treatments". Since then, this field is rapidly advancing both curative treatment and disease prevention by accounting for both individual and environmental variability. While a substantial evidence for accelerating adoption of Precision Medicine in other spheres of medicine exists, application of Precision Medicine in infectious diseases is far more complex. A federal judge on Friday dismissed a lawsuit by Maryland’s Democratic attorney general that sought to protect the Affordable Care Act from threats by the Trump administration to undermine it. The judge, Ellen L. Hollander, appointed by President Obama, ruled that the state’s attorney general had not proved that the administration is failing to enforce the sprawling 2010 health care law. The percentage of Americans without health insurance has reached its highest point since 2014, when Obamacare was still in its early years of implementation. The uninsured rate was 13.7 percent in the fourth quarter of 2018, well above the record-low rate of 10.9 seen in 2016, the last year of President Obama's second term, according to a survey released by Gallup Wednesday. That represents about 7 million people losing or dropping insurance between 2016 and 2018, Gallup said. (Jessie Hellmann, The Hill)         (Source: The Commonwealth Fund: Publications)

Race and Social Policy: Confronting Our Discomfort.
Authors: Crewe SE, Gourdine RM Abstract The election of President Barack Obama, our first U.S. black president, for many was accompanied by the hope of a postracial society. This hope was short lived. This growing racial tension was particularly prominent in the U.S. 2016 presidential election that magnified the racial, ethnic, and class divisions in our country. An ethical responsibility of social workers is to address social justice issues and work individually and collectively to address them. Although mindful that social policy and subsequent legislation do not always change the hearts of people, dialo...

Millions of American women are receiving birth control at no cost to them through workplace health plans, the result of the Obama-era Affordable Care Act (ACA), which expanded access to contraception. The Trump administration sought to allow more employers to opt out because of religious or moral objections. But its plans were put on hold by two federal judges, one in Pennsylvania and the other in California, in cases that could eventually reach the Supreme Court. An Intersectional Approach to Therapy with Transgender Adolescents and Their Families.
Abstract In recent years, transgender individuals have experienced both greater visibility and increased discrimination, such as direct discriminatory practices and removal of Obama-era protections for transgender students. Minority stress theory suggests that discrimination toward gender identity is related to poor mental health outcomes. This hypothesis is supported by the literature regarding transgender adults and adolescents; notably, familial rejection is highlighted as having a strong association with negative outcomes. The field of psychology has continued to explore best practices in approaches to...

The Misclassification of Medical Marijuana.
Authors: Krystal H Abstract Marijuana has a complicated legal, social, and economic history in the United States, as well as an uncertain future. Marijuana has been consistently tied to racial minority groups since its arrival in the United States in the 1900s, and former Attorney General Jeff Sessions further propagated that notion. AG Sessions even recently wrote a memo that directly contradicted Obama-era policy, demonstrating that the current legal status of marijuana in both state and federal government is currently up for debate. While several states have legalized marijuana for medical or even recre...

Underfilled Balloon-Expandable Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation With Ad Hoc Post-Dilation - Pulsatile Flow Simulation Using a Patient-Specific Three-Dimensional Printing Model.
CONCLUSIONS: Excessive underfilled implantation showed unacceptable acute hemodynamics. Abnormal leaflet motions after underfilled implantation raised concerns about durability. Flow simulations using patient-oriented 3D models could help to investigate hemodynamics, leaflet motions, and the PVL mechanism. Former President Obama on Monday took to Twitter to urge his followers to sign up for health insurance before the Saturday deadline. Obama mentioned how in the past he had made more light-hearted efforts in trying to boost enrollment into Obamacare but said this year he decided to play it straight. Enrollment in Obamacare plans is down by 11 percent compared to last year, according to numbers released by the Trump administration. In the first five weeks of this year's sign-up period, about 3.2 million people signed up for Obamacare plans, compared to the 3.6 million who had signed up by that point last year.  (Owen Daughe...
