Cancers, Vol. 14, Pages 4024: Quantitative Analysis of Colonic Perfusion Using ICG Fluorescence Angiography and Its Consequences for Anastomotic Healing in a Rat Model
a Obama Forty-three rats were randomly assigned to the following four groups: non-ischemic group (Control Group), 1 cm-long ischemic group (Group 1), 2 cm-long ischemic group (Group 2), and 3 cm-long ischemic group (Group 3). The rates of AL were 0% (0/10) in the Control Group, 22.2% (2/9) in Group 1, 25% (2/8) in Group 2, and 50% (4/8) in Group 3. The bursting pressure of the Control Group was significantly higher than that of the other groups (p < 0.01). Regarding the pathological findings, the granulation thickness and the number of blood vessels at the anastomosed site were significantly higher in the Co...

When should U.S. research be stamped ‘top secret’? NSF asks for a new look at the issue
The U.S. academic community is gearing up for a new effort to convince national policymakers that the benefits of keeping government-funded basic research out in the open—and not stamping it classified—far outweigh any threat to national security from sharing scientific findings. The National Science Foundation (NSF) has asked the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) to hold a workshop on factors affecting the classification of federally funded research. Tentatively scheduled for the fall, the meeting is expected to revisit a Cold War-era policy that sets openness as the gold standard...

Sensors, Vol. 22, Pages 4556: A Review of Image Processing Techniques for Deepfakes
This study also discusses how to counter the threats from deepfake technology and alleviate its impact. The outcomes recommend that despite a serious threat to society, business, and political institutions, they can be combated through appropriate policies, regulation, individual actions, training, and education. In addition, the evolution of technology is desired for deepfake identification, content authentication, and deepfake prevention. Different studies have performed deepfake detection using machine learning and deep learning techniques such as support vector machine, random forest, multilayer perceptron, k-nearest n...

Nurse's perceptions of support for sexual and reproductive issues in adolescents and young adults with cancer
PLoS One. 2022 Jun 8;17(6):e0265830. doi: 10.1371/journal.pone.0265830. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTAdolescent and young adult (AYA) with cancer are at risk for developing sexual and reproductive problems; therefore, they have special needs. AYA with cancer treated in both pediatric and adult wards are a minority in Japan; thus, accumulating experience for supporting this unique patient population is difficult for nurses. Hence, this study aimed to clarify nurses' perceptions on support for sexual and reproductive issues among AYA with cancer. A questionnaire survey was administered to nurses at designated cancer hospitals ac...

Cancers, Vol. 14, Pages 2328: Correlation between Colon Perfusion and Postoperative Fecal Output through a Transanal Drainage Tube during Laparoscopic Low Anterior Resection
This study investigated the relationship between intestinal perfusion and fecal volume through TDT in laparoscopic low anterior resection (LAR). A total of 59 rectal cancer patients who underwent laparoscopic LAR with both intraoperative ICG angiography and postoperative TDT placement were retrospectively analyzed. The relationship between intestinal perfusion and fecal volume through TDT was examined. Based on the ICG fluorescence, the transection site was shifted more proximally in 20 cases (33.9%). Symptomatic AL occurred in seven patients (11.8%). The AL rate of the patients whose daily fecal volume exceeded 100 mL/day...

Relationship between Restless legs syndrome associated symptoms and presence of depression during pregnancy
Women Health. 2022 Mar 30:1-7. doi: 10.1080/03630242.2022.2055698. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRestless legs syndrome (RLS) is associated with depression in the general population. Although depression can lead to adverse events during the perinatal period, the association between RLS and depression remains under debate. Thus, we examined the association between depression and RLS, including RLS-associated symptoms, in pregnant women. We evaluated the presence of RLS and RLS-associated symptoms in 135 pregnant women using questionnaires on RLS symptoms based on Allen's symptoms and the International Restless Legs Syndrome...

Development and evaluation of a colorectal cancer screening method using machine learning ‐based gut microbiota analysis
We have established a new machine learning-based colorectal cancer (CRC) diagnostic model using the gut microbiota as an indicator. Validation using independent test datasets showed that the true positive rate of our CRC diagnostic model increased substantially as CRC progressed from stage I to stage II. These results reveal the possibility of the practical application of gut microbiota-based CRC screening tests. AbstractAccumulating evidence indicates that alterations of gut microbiota are associated with colorectal cancer (CRC). Therefore, the use of gut microbiota for the diagnosis of CRC has received attention. Recentl...

Prevalence and associated factors of psychological distress among young adult cancer patients in Japan
This study aimed (1) to examine the prevalence of psychological distress among AYA cancer patients within a year of diagnosis to long-term survivors and (2) to describe socio-demographic and cancer-related characteristics associated with psychological distress.METHODS: In a cross-sectional web-based survey, patients who scored 5 or more on the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale were assessed for significant psychological distress. Logistic regression examined whether demographics, clinical variables, and social support were associated with psychological distress.RESULTS: A total of 206 young adult cancer patients partici...
