Higher Dietary Methyl Donor Micronutrient Consumption is Associated with Higher Muscle Strength in Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study
In conclusion, our findings revealed that higher dietary methyl donor micronutrient consumption is associated with enhanced muscle strength. As a result, advice on a higher intake of methyl donor-rich foods including grains, nuts, dairy, and seafood might be recommended by dietitians as a general guideline to adhere to. Additional prospective studies are needed to confirm the findings.PMID:38443195 | DOI:10.1017/S0007114524000424 (Source: The British Journal of Nutrition)

A Review of Shared Decision-Making, Published Protocols, and Post-desensitization Strategies in Oral Immunotherapy (OIT)
AbstractPurpose of ReviewThe aim of this review is to highlight key published oral immunotherapy (OIT) protocols and post-desensitization strategies for the major food allergens and to cover important concepts to consider when evaluating OIT for food-allergic patients. Shared decision-making should help identify patient and family values which will help influence the type of evidence-based protocol and maintenance strategy to use.Recent FindingsWith food OIT emerging as a treatment option, there is a pressing need for patients, physicians, and other providers to have a nuanced understanding of the management choices availa...

Fatal food anaphylaxis in adults and children
AbstractAnaphylaxis is a life-threatening reaction characterized by the acute onset of symptoms involving different organ systems and requiring immediate medical intervention. The incidence of fatal food anaphylaxis is 0.03 to 0.3 million/people/year. Most fatal food-induced anaphylaxis occurs in the second and third decades of life. The identified risk factors include the delayed use of epinephrine, the presence of asthma, the use of recreational drugs (alcohol, nicotine, cannabis, etc.), and an upright position. In the United Kingdom (UK) and Canada, the reported leading causal foods are peanuts and tree nuts. In Italy, ...

A Patient With Oral Discomfort and Reduced Oral Aperture
A patient had burning and pain in the mouth, reduced oral aperture, white-tan plaques on the oral mucosa, and thickened buccal mucosae bilaterally; biopsy of the lower labial mucosa showed subepithelial fibrosis. She had no history of cigarette smoking or use of chewing tobacco but had current and past history of chewing areca nuts. What is the diagnosis and what would you do next? Determination of volatile aroma composition of some hazelnut varieties grown in Ak çakoca conditions
This study has shown that the climate and soil conditions of Akçakoca cause the emergence of unique taste profiles through the effect of hazelnut varieties on volatile aroma components. The findings emphasize that regional diversity and local ecosystem factors play a critical role in determining flavor in hazelnut kernels. This study also emphasizes that variety selection is a critical factor in ensuring sustainability in hazelnut cultivation and that determining volatile aroma components is an important indicator in this selection.PMID:38430030 | DOI:10.14715/cmb/2024.70.2.19 (Source: Mol Biol Cell)

The Overlooked Association Between Nutrition and the Development of Acute Myeloid Leukaemia: A Scoping Review
AbstractPurpose of ReviewAcute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML) constitutes a mere 1% of global cancer cases. This scoping review aims to investigate the association between nutrition and the development of AML, providing a foundation for future research in this field.Recent FindingsA systematic search was conducted across PubMed, EBSCO, Taylor and Francis, Science Direct and Cochrane Library using specific keywords. Inclusion criteria comprised observational studies and clinical trials examining the association between nutrition and the development of AML. Articles selected for analysis were restricted to those published in Englis...

Association between dietary phytochemical index and risk of benign prostatic hyperplasia: a case-control study
CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates a protective association between DPI and BPH risk in the Middle-Eastern population. Encouraging higher intake of phytochemical-rich foods may help reduce the risk of BPH, highlighting the relevance of nutritional science in promoting prostate health.PMID:38429831 | DOI:10.1186/s41043-024-00531-5 (Source: Journal of Health, Population, and Nutrition)

The Natural History and Risk Factors for the Development of Food Allergies in Children and Adults
AbstractPurpose of ReviewThis narrative review explores food allergy prevalence and natural history stratified by life stages, especially in context of evolving knowledge over the last few decades.Recent FindingsThe prevalence of food allergy remains highest in early childhood with common food triggers being cow ’s milk, soy, hen’s egg, wheat, peanut, tree nuts, sesame, fish, and shellfish. This correlates with certain risk factors especially pertinent in the postnatal period which appear to predispose an individual to developing a food allergy. Some allergies (such as milk and egg) were previously thou ght to be easil...

Biofilm formation by < em > Staphylococcus pseudintermedius < /em > on titanium implants
This study assessed biofilm formation by Staphylococcus pseudintermedius on titanium nuts used in veterinary orthopaedic surgery. Biofilm quantification employed safranin staining and spectrophotometric measurement, while bacterial counts were determined in colony-forming units (CFU). Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) evaluated the biofilm morphology on the surface of titanium nuts. All samples had CFU counts. Absorbance values that evidence biofilm formation were observed in seven of the eight samples tested. SEM images revealed robust bacterial colonization, and significant extracellular polymeric substance production, ...
