Efficacy and safety of adjuvant immunoadsorption in pemphigus vulgaris and pemphigus foliaceus (IA-Pem Study): a multicentre randomised controlled trial
CONCLUSIONS: In this study, adjuvant IA did not show a shorter time to clinical remission but a corticosteroid-sparing effect. In patients with extensive PV/PF, post hoc analysis suggests that adjuvant IA may possibly lead to earlier remission, but potential adverse events must be carefully weighed against the expected benefits.PMID:38133541 | DOI:10.1093/bjd/ljad489 (Source: The British Journal of Dermatology)

The effects of a psychiatric clerkship on stigmatizing attitudes toward mental disorders as held by German medical students
ConclusionOur findings indicate that a psychiatric clerkship that involves students in direct interaction with patients may effectively reduce stigma. Therefore, we advocate the incorporation of components of direct interaction in medical education to combat stigma and unequal treatment, as this could improve outcomes in patients with severe mental illnesses. Rebuilding for Tomorrow ’s Outbreak: The State of Special Pathogen Preparedness in the USA in the Wake of COVID-19
AbstractPurpose of ReviewSpecial pathogens require unique planning care capabilities within healthcare facilities and can pose significant public health threats. Outbreaks have continued to emerge through the COVID-19 pandemic and serve as reminders of the need to have tiered levels of readiness and resources supporting all healthcare settings.Recent FindingsRecent outbreaks of Marburg virus, Sudan virus, Lassa virus, and Nipah virus are examples of low-incidence pathogens that carry disproportionally high potential consequences for healthcare worker safety and public health. While the COVID-19 pandemic has increased aware...

Viruses, Vol. 15, Pages 2349: Development of an Immunochromatography Assay to Detect Marburg Virus and Ravn Virus
Andrea Marzi Ayato Takada The recent outbreaks of Marburg virus disease (MVD) in Guinea, Ghana, Equatorial Guinea, and Tanzania, none of which had reported previous outbreaks, imply increasing risks of spillover of the causative viruses, Marburg virus (MARV) and Ravn virus (RAVV), from their natural host animals. These outbreaks have emphasized the need for the development of rapid diagnostic tests for this disease. Using monoclonal antibodies specific to the viral nucleoprotein, we developed an immunochromatography (IC) assay for the rapid diagnosis of MVD. The IC assay was found to be capable of detecting approxima...

Viruses, Vol. 15, Pages 2335: Characterization of the Cynomolgus Macaque Model of Marburg Virus Disease and Assessment of Timing for Therapeutic Treatment Testing
The objective of this study was to characterize disease manifestations and pathogenesis in cynomolgus macaques exposed to MARV. The results of this natural history study may be used to identify features of MARV disease useful in defining the ideal treatment initiation time for subsequent evaluations of investigational therapeutics using this model. Twelve cynomolgus macaques were exposed to a target dose of 1000 plaque-forming units MARV by the intramuscular route, and six control animals were mock-exposed. The primary endpoint of this study was survival to Day 28 post-inoculation (PI). Anesthesia events were minimized wit...

Assessment of carious dental lesions and treatment options: comparison of the knowledge of dental students and orthodontic assistants
Bundesgesundheitsblatt Gesundheitsforschung Gesundheitsschutz. 2023 Nov 9. doi: 10.1007/s00103-023-03799-w. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn order to optimize dental education, established procedures for caries diagnosis and therapy, such as the International Caries Classification and Management System (ICCMS), should be integrated into the curriculum. In preparation, the level of knowledge of dental students on caries detection and management was surveyed in order to specifically address deficits in dental teaching. In addition, the data were compared with the knowledge of clinically experienced dentists. The results are ...

Emergent Risk Group-4 (RG-4) Filoviruses: A paradox in progress
Bioinformation. 2023 Aug 31;19(8):829-832. doi: 10.6026/97320630019829. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTFiloviruses, categorized as World Health Organization (WHO) Risk Group 4 (RG-4) pathogens, represent significant global health risks due to their extraordinary virulence. The Filoviridae family encompasses Ebola strains such as Sudan, Zaire, Bundibugyo, Tai Forest (formerly known as Ivory Coast), Reston, and Bombali, in addition to the closely related Marburg and Ravn virus strains. Filoviruses originated from a common ancestor about 10,000 years ago and displayed remarkable consistency in genetic heterogeneity until the 20th c...
