Influence of Fibrinogen Concentrate on Neonatal Clot Structure When Administered Ex Vivo After Cardiopulmonary Bypass
CONCLUSIONS: Our results show that clots formed ex vivo with clinically relevant doses of FC (0.9 mg/mL) display similar structural and degradation characteristics compared to the in vivo transfusion of cryoprecipitate. These findings suggest that FC is effective in restoring structural fibrin clot properties after CPB. Future studies after the administration of FC in vivo are needed to validate this hypothesis.PMID:36727748 | DOI:10.1213/ANE.0000000000006357 (Source: Anesthesia and Analgesia)

Purification and structure of luminal domain C of human Niemann – Pick C1 protein
Niemann – Pick C1 protein (NPC1) is a membrane protein that primarily resides in late endosomes and lysosomes, and plays an important role in cholesterol homeostasis in the cell. The second luminal domain of NPC1 (NPC1-C) serves as the intracellular receptor for Ebola and Marburg viruses. Here, the recombinant production of nonglycosylated and glycosylated NPC1-C and a new crystal form of the nonglycosylated protein are reported. The crystals belonged to space group P21 and diffracted to 2.3   Å resolution. The structure is similar to other reported structures of NPC1-C, with differences observed in the protruding loo...

Development of an Instrument to Assess Expectations for the Use of Online Gaming, Social Networking Sites, and Online Pornography: the Marburg Internet Use Expectations (MINUS-X) Questionnaire
AbstractUser ’s expectations contribute to the maintenance of problematic use of online gaming (OG), social networking (SN), and online pornography (OP). Since an instrument to assess use expectations across applications is lacking, this study aimed at developing and testing such a questionnaire. It consists o f a general module (GM), which includes expectations relevant to all three applications, and three application-specific modules. A pilot and a validation study were conducted with 2880 German adults. We conducted item analyses, exploratory factor analyses (EFA), exploratory structural equation model ling, and corre...

Viruses, Vol. 15, Pages 350: Marburg and Ebola Virus Infections Elicit a Complex, Muted Inflammatory State in Bats
In this study, we outline multiple interconnected pathways that respond to infection by MARV and EBOV, providing insights into the complexity of the mechanisms that enable bats to resist the disease caused by filoviral infections. The results have the potential to aid in the development of new strategies to effectively mitigate and treat the disease caused by these viruses in humans. (Source: Viruses)

Transmission routes of neuropathogenic pathogens-Possible mechanisms of neuroinvasion
Nervenarzt. 2023 Jan 23. doi: 10.1007/s00115-022-01428-6. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDespite natural protective barriers, many human pathogens can penetrate the nervous system. The pathogens have developed sophisticated mechanisms to overturn the privileged immune status of the nervous system. The central nervous system (CNS) has natural barriers and immunological protective mechanisms, such as the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier (BCSFB), that prevent the invasion of pathogens. Bacteria enter the CNS, for example, through transcellular penetration, paracellular entry or via infected l...

Stephens The past few decades have been marked by drastic modifications to the landscape by anthropogenic processes, leading to increased variability in the environment. For populations that thrive at their distributional boundaries, these changes can affect them drastically, as Schmalhausen’s law predicts that their dynamics are more likely to be susceptible to environmental varia...

Mental disorders are no predictors to determine the duration of cannabis-based treatment for chronic pain
ConclusionWe found no evidence indicating that the benefits of short-term vs. long-term cannabis-based treatment can be predicted by mental comorbidities or psychosocial factors. However, because CBM may be included in approaches to treat CP, questions about the ideal duration of such treatment remain to be answered. (Source: Frontiers in Psychiatry)

Viruses, Vol. 15, Pages 122: Ebola Virus Activates IRE1α-Dependent XBP1u Splicing Viruses doi: 10.3390/v15010122 Authors: Cornelius Rohde Sebastian Pfeiffer Sara Baumgart Stephan Becker Verena Krähling Ebola (EBOV) and Marburg virus (MARV) are highly pathogenic filoviruses that influence cellular signaling according to their own needs. MARV has been shown to regulate the IRE1α-dependent unfolded protein response (UPR) to ensure optimal virus replication. It was not known whether EBOV affects this signaling cascade, which can be beneficial or detrimental for viruses. Activation of IR...

Evaluation of the Marburg Heart Score and INTERCHEST score compared to current telephone triage for chest pain in out-of-hours primary care
CONCLUSION: Diagnostic risk stratification scores for chest pain may also improve telephone triage for major events in out-of-hours primary care, by reducing the number of unnecessary referrals without compromising triage safety. Further validation is warranted.PMID:36580267 | DOI:10.1007/s12471-022-01745-0 (Source: Netherlands Heart Journal)
