The history of circadian rhythm research in Austria
Wien Klin Wochenschr. 2023 May 31. doi: 10.1007/s00508-023-02199-z. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn view of the recent revival of interest in circadian biology and circadian epidemiology at the Medical University of Vienna, it seems appropriate to highlight the rich and pioneering history of circadian research in Austria. Among the forefathers of circadian research in Vienna are Otto Marburg (1874-1948), who discovered important elements of the pineal gland physiology, Robert Hofstätter (1883-1970), who used pineal gland extract in obstetrics/gynecology, and Paul Engel (1907-1997), who discovered that the pineal gland wa...

Mechanistic inhibition of Monkeypox and Marburg virus infection by O-rhamnosides and Kaempferol-o-rhamnosides derivatives: a new-fangled computational approach
This study investigates the potential of several O-rhamnosides and Kaempferol-O-rhamnosides as Mpox and MARV inhibitors using molecular modeling methods, including ADMET, molecular docking, and molecular dynamics/MD simulation. The effectiveness of these compounds against the viruses was assessed using the Prediction of Activity Spectra for Substances (PASS) prediction. The study’s primary focus is molecular docking prediction, which demonstrated that ligands (L07, L08, and L09) bind to Mpox (PDB ID: 4QWO) and MARV (PDB ID: 4OR8) with binding affinities ranging from -8.00 kcal/mol to -9.5 kcal/mol. HOMO-LUMO based quantu...

Bismuth Cations: Fluoride Ion Abstraction, Isocyanide Coordination, and Impact of Steric Bulk on Lewis Acidity
Chemistry. 2023 May 12:e202301354. doi: 10.1002/chem.202301354. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTInvited for the cover of this issue are the groups of Carsten von Hänisch and Crispin Lichtenberg at the Philipps University of Marburg. The image depicts a bismuth kraken, eagerly grabbing Lewis basic substrates, thereby solving scientific puzzles about bismuth-based Lewis acidity. Risk factors and protective factors of acute postoperative pain: an observational study at a German university hospital with cross-sectional and longitudinal inpatient data
Conclusions The German SFQ is a valid, reliable and economical instrument with which the important psychological predictor surgical fear can be assessed. Modifiable factors that increase the risk of postoperative pain were higher pain intensity before surgery and being fearful about negative consequences of the surgery whereas positive expectations seem to buffer against postsurgical pain. Trial registration numbers DRKS00021764 and DRKS00021766. (Source: BMJ Open)
