Imaging findings and treatment outcomes of a rare subtype of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw
ConclusionAmong the MRONJ types, the PRd type has a poor prognosis. Therefore, accumulating and analyzing more PRd cases in the future is warranted. This is the first report to describe the presence of this specific subtype of MRONJ. (Source: Journal of Bone and Mineral Metabolism)

Incidence of and risk factors for spondylolisthesis, scoliosis, and vertebral fracture in rheumatoid arthritis
ConclusionThe incidence of scoliosis was related in patients with poor control of RA, while new vertebral fracture was more common in patients with use of glucocorticoid. Control of disease activity might be important in preventing radiological lumbar disorders in RA. (Source: Journal of Bone and Mineral Metabolism)

Treatment pattern in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis: a population-based cohort study in South Korea
ConclusionGiven the frequent treatment interruptions across all OP medications, our findings on the factors associated with treatment interruption will serve to implement targeted interventions in reinforcing persistence to OP treatment. (Source: Journal of Bone and Mineral Metabolism)

PGC-1: a key regulator in bone homeostasis
AbstractPeroxisome proliferator-activated receptor- γ coactivator-1 (PGC-1) is an inducible co-regulator of nuclear receptors and is involved in a wide variety of biological responses. As the master regulators of mitochondrial biogenesis and function, PGC-1α and PGC-1β have been reported to play key roles in bone metabolism. They can be rapidly in duced under conditions of increased metabolic activities, such as osteoblastogenesis and osteoclastogenesis, to fulfill greater energy demand or facilitate other biochemical reactions. PGC-1α and PGC-1β have both overlapping and distinct functions with each other among their...

Equivalent values between anterior vertebral height, wedge ratio, and wedge angle in osteoporotic vertebral fractures
ConclusionThe equivalent values for V-mobility presented as Ha, WR, and WA were obtained. The mean WR and WA values equivalent to Ha of 1.0  mm in grade 1–3 vertebrae were 3.5% and 1.5°, respectively. (Source: Journal of Bone and Mineral Metabolism)

Association of plasma neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin with parameters of CKD –MBD in maintenance hemodialysis patients
ConclusionPlasma NGAL levels were positively associated with ALP in MHD patients; and downtrends were shown after PTX  + AT in patients with severe SHPT. These findings suggest that NGAL is a participant in CKD–MBD under MHD condition. (Source: Journal of Bone and Mineral Metabolism)

Baseline renal dysfunction determines mortality following parathyroidectomy in primary hyperparathyroidism: analysis of Indian PHPT registry
ConclusionsNonsurvivors in PHPT had greater prevalence and more severe baseline renal dysfunction than survivors. Survival after parathyroidectomy was significantly associated with estimated glomerular filtration rate at baseline. (Source: Journal of Bone and Mineral Metabolism)

Performance evaluation of the new chemiluminescent intact FGF23 assay relative to the existing assay system
ConclusionThe new measurement kit yielded lower FGF23 values when compared with the previous assay. Clinicians should consider this discrepancy when they assay intact FGF23 values with CL. (Source: Journal of Bone and Mineral Metabolism)

USF2 reduces BMP3 expression via transcriptional activation of miR-34a, thus promoting osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs
ConclusionTaken together, USF2 enhanced osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs via downregulating BMP3 by interacting with miR-34a promoter. (Source: Journal of Bone and Mineral Metabolism)

Novel microbiota-related gene set enrichment analysis identified osteoporosis associated gut microbiota from autoimmune diseases
ConclusionOur study found that part of the gut microbiota could be novel regulators of BMDs and autoimmune diseases via the effects of its metabolites and may lead to a better understanding of the role played by gut microbiota in the communication of the microbiota-skeletal/immune-gut axis. The relationship between serum hydroxyvitamin D levels and fall risks in young adults
ConclusionBy using an objective computerized technique, fall risk was found to be higher in young adults with 25(OH)D deficiency than in the controls. Vitamin D deficiency, even when clinically occult, seems to affect balance negatively. (Source: Journal of Bone and Mineral Metabolism)

Efficacy of romosozumab in patients with osteoporosis on maintenance hemodialysis in Japan; an observational study
ConclusionsBMD was increased significantly during romosozumab treatment at the lumbar spine, and the femoral neck, respectively, at 1  year in HD patients. Hypocalcemia occurred but without any intolerable event. There was no apparent increase in CVD events during 1 year of study, suggesting romosozumab as a promising agent for HD patients with severe osteoporosis. Replacing sedentary time for physical activity on bone density in patients with chronic kidney disease
ConclusionThese results suggest that a small increase in MVPA time (e.g., 10  min/day) may attenuate the decline in bone density in patients with CKD. Our findings may provide insight for the development of novel strategies for improving bone health in patients with CKD. (Source: Journal of Bone and Mineral Metabolism)
