FSH may mediate the association between HbA1c and bone turnover markers in postmenopausal women with type 2 diabetes
ConclusionHbA1c was the crucial determinant contributing to the suppression of BTMs. FSH might play a novel mediation role in BTM suppression due to HbA1c or BMI. (Source: Journal of Bone and Mineral Metabolism)

An eQTL variant of ALDH1A2 is associated with Kashin-Beck disease in Chinese population
ConclusionOur case –control study indicates that the common variant rs3204689 near ALDH1A2 is associated with KBD in Chinese population. The risk allele G of rs3204689 is statistically linked to the high expression of ALDH1A2, which is up-regulated in the cartilage and whole blood of KBD patients. Our findings sugge st a potential role of ALDH1A2 in the pathogenesis of KBD. (Source: Journal of Bone and Mineral Metabolism)

Long-term safety of eldecalcitol in Japanese patients with osteoporosis: a retrospective, large-scale database study
ConclusionThe risk of hypercalcemia and AKI associated with ELD use observed in this retrospective analysis is similar to that reported previously in the Japanese post-marketing surveillance of ELD. Furthermore, ELD, similar to AVD, may not increase the risk of ONJ and AFF. (Source: Journal of Bone and Mineral Metabolism)

Association between obesity and ossification of spinal ligaments in 622 asymptomatic subjects: a cross-sectional study
ConclusionBMI was associated with the prevalence of OALL, cervical OPLL, thoracic OPLL, and OLF in asymptomatic subjects, suggesting that obesity is associated with the development of heterotopic ossification of the spinal ligaments. (Source: Journal of Bone and Mineral Metabolism)

Disease-specific complications and multidisciplinary interventions in achondroplasia
AbstractAchondroplasia (ACH) is the most common skeletal dysplasia and characterized by a disproportionate short stature, macrocephaly with frontal bossing, exaggerated lumbar lordosis, and trident hands. It is induced by activated mutations in the fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR3) gene. In addition to short stature, patients with ACH have a high prevalence of medical complications, including upper airway obstructive apnea, increased mortality, foramen magnum stenosis, hydrocephalus, developmental delay, recurrent ear infections, genu varum, obesity, and spinal canal stenosis, throughout their whole life. Several...

Inhibitor of protein kinase N3 suppresses excessive bone resorption in ovariectomized mice
ConclusionsOur results showed that Pkn3 has potential as a therapeutic target for bone loss due to increased bone resorption. SB202190 is promising as a lead compound for the development of novel anti-bone-resorbing agents. (Source: Journal of Bone and Mineral Metabolism)

Maximum number of bone cross-linked vertebrae: an index for BMD in diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis
ConclusionFemur proximal BMD and mean max TB showed different trends after max VB  = 9, which suggests that max VB is an index of BMD, and that DISH has at least two possible populations in terms of BMD and bone cross-link thickness. (Source: Journal of Bone and Mineral Metabolism)

LINC02381, a sponge of miR-21, weakens osteogenic differentiation of hUC-MSCs through KLF12-mediated Wnt4 transcriptional repression
ConclusionIn summary, LINC02381 repressed osteogenic differentiation of hUS-MSCs through sponging miR-21 to enhance KLF12-mediated inactivation of Wnt/ β-catenin pathway, indicating that LINC02381 might be a therapeutic target for osteoporosis. (Source: Journal of Bone and Mineral Metabolism)

Risk factors affecting vertebral collapse and kyphotic progression in postmenopausal osteoporotic vertebral fractures
ConclusionIn cases with large VI at the time of injury, the CR and KA were significantly higher at 6  months after injury. Moreover, the CR was affected by the 25(OH)D level, while the KA was affected by the CSA of the psoas major upon admission. (Source: Journal of Bone and Mineral Metabolism)

Skeletal effects of combined bisphosphonates treatment and parathyroidectomy in osteoporotic patients with primary hyperparathyroidism
ConclusionsThere is no additional benefit of BMD in combination treatment with bisphosphonates and PTX over PTX alone in osteoporotic patients with PHPT. Combined bisphosphonate treatment might interfere with the increase in bone mass caused by PTX. (Source: Journal of Bone and Mineral Metabolism)

Local bone metabolism during the consolidation process of spinal interbody fusion
ConclusionFollowing LIF surgery, there is a rapid increase in bone metabolism at the vertebral endplates that develops towards the center of the interbody region. Knowing the local bone metabolism during uncompromised consolidation of spinal interbody fusion might enable identification of impaired bone formation early after LIF surgery using18F-NaF PET/CT scanning.
