Using functional principal component analysis (FPCA) to quantify sitting patterns derived from wearable sensors
Sedentary behavior (SB) is a recognized risk factor for many chronic diseases. ActiGraph and activPAL are two commonly used wearable accelerometers in SB research. The former measures body movement and the lat... (Source: International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity)

The relationship between prescription rates of oral corticosteroids for respiratory diseases and deprivation in England
This study carried out a multivariable regression analysis of publicly available data and found that deprivation is associated with a statistically significant increase in the proportion of patients receiving an OCS prescription for asthma or COPD at a GP practice level (p < 0.001). The model estimated that the proportion of prescriptions is 1.88% (95% CI 1.83% to 1.92%) and 2.84% (95% CI 2.70% to 2.98%) for the least deprived GP practice and the most deprived GP practice, respectively. This study lays the groundwork for future research using individual patient level data to consider the impact of variation in OCS presc...

Don't SNARC me now! Intraindividual variability of cognitive phenomena - Insights from the Ironman paradigm
Cognition. 2024 Apr 24;248:105781. doi: 10.1016/j.cognition.2024.105781. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTwo implicit generalizations are often made from group-level studies in cognitive experimental psychology and their common statistical analysis in the general linear model: (1) Group-level phenomena are assumed to be present in every participant with variations between participants being often treated as random error in data analyses; (2) phenomena are assumed to be stable over time. In this preregistered study, we investigated the validity of these generalizations in the commonly used parity judgment task. In the propose...

Beyond the Human Genome Project: The Age of Complete Human Genome Sequences and Pangenome References
Annu Rev Genomics Hum Genet. 2024 Apr 25. doi: 10.1146/annurev-genom-021623-081639. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe Human Genome Project was an enormous accomplishment, providing a foundation for countless explorations into the genetics and genomics of the human species. Yet for many years, the human genome reference sequence remained incomplete and lacked representation of human genetic diversity. Recently, two major advances have emerged to address these shortcomings: complete gap-free human genome sequences, such as the one developed by the Telomere-to-Telomere Consortium, and high-quality pangenomes, such as the one ...

The Role of Number of Affected Vessels on Radiologic and Clinical Outcomes of Patients with Blunt Cerebrovascular Injury
There is a lack of data on the role of characteristics of injured vessels on the outcomes of patients with blunt cerebrovascular injuries (BCVIs). The aim of this study was to assess the effect of the number (single vs multiple) of injured vessels on outcomes. (Source: Journal of Vascular Surgery)

Enhancing clinical decision support with genomic tools in breast cancer: A Scottish perspective
CONCLUSIONS: Genomic assays offer the potential for risk-stratified decision making regarding the use of chemotherapy. They can help reduce unnecessary chemotherapy treatment and identify a subgroup of patients with more adverse genomic tumour biology. A recent publication by Health Improvement Scotland (HIS) has updated guidance on use of the RS test for NHS Scotland. It suggests to limit its use to the intermediate risk PREDICT group. Our study shows the impact of the RS test in the low and high risk PREDICT groups. The implementation across Scotland has resulted in a notable shift in practice, leading to a significant r...

COVID-19 outcome trends by vaccination status in Canada, December 2020-January 2022
CONCLUSION: Vaccination remains one of the most important public health interventions, particularly among older adults, to protect against COVID-19 severe outcomes as the pandemic evolves. Routine monitoring of COVID-19 outcomes by vaccination status can identify changes in COVID-19 epidemiology and inform public health action and policy.PMID:38655240 | PMC:PMC11037879 | DOI:10.14745/ccdr.v50i12a05 (Source: Can Commun Dis Rep)
