A mouse model of progressive lung fibrosis with cutaneous involvement induced by a combination of oropharyngeal and osmotic minipump bleomycin delivery
Am J Physiol Lung Cell Mol Physiol. 2024 Apr 23. doi: 10.1152/ajplung.00408.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSystemic sclerosis (SSc) with interstitial lung disease (SSc-ILD) lacks curative pharmacological treatments, thus necessitating effective animal models for candidate drug discovery. Existing Bleomycin (BLM)-induced SSc-ILD mouse models feature spatially limited pulmonary fibrosis, spontaneously resolving after 28 days. Here, we present an alternative BLM administration approach in female C57BL/6 mice, combining oropharyngeal aspiration (OA) and subcutaneous mini-pump delivery (pump) of BLM to induce a sustained a...

A Case of Palmoplantar Keratoderma in the Constellation of Connective Tissue Diseases
Cureus. 2024 Mar 20;16(3):e56531. doi: 10.7759/cureus.56531. eCollection 2024 Mar.ABSTRACTOverlap syndrome is a clinical challenge and brings together a wide range of treatment options for the treating physician. Addressing each and every complaint of the patient is crucial. A 50-year-old female patient presented with skin thickening, blackening, and hyperkeratosis; dysphagia; joint pain; features of myopathy; Raynaud's phenomenon; and dry mouth. Inflammatory markers were raised along with a positive antinuclear antibody (ANA) with Golgi apparatus pattern, anti-Sjögren's-syndrome-related antigen A (anti-SSA)/Ro60 3+, anti...

In-Person Versus Remote 6-Minute Walk and Incremental Shuttle Walk Distances in Advanced Lung Disease
CONCLUSIONS: Differences in the distance walked may have resulted from different track lengths, widths, and walking surfaces. This should be considered in test interpretation if tests are repeated under different conditions.PMID:38649272 | DOI:10.4187/respcare.11417 (Source: Respiratory Care)

Toupet fundoplication to prevent progression of scleroderma-associated interstitial lung damage: a  study protocol
ConclusionsThe expected reduction of reflux burden in SSc patients selected for Toupet fundoplication may improve GERD symptoms/complications, pulmonary function, and quality of life, and may be associated with a  reduced risk for lung transplant. (Source: European Surgery)

Diagnostic Value of Krebs von den Lungen (KL-6) for Interstitial Lung Disease: A European Prospective Cohort
CONCLUSION: Serum KL-6 values greater than 465U/mL have excellent sensitivity and specificity for detecting ILD in our Spanish cohort. Multicentre studies are needed to validate our results.PMID:38644152 | DOI:10.1016/j.arbres.2024.03.028 (Source: Archivos de Bronconeumologia)

Anti-U1RNP antibodies are associated with a distinct clinical phenotype and a worse survival in patients with systemic sclerosis
CONCLUSIONS: In SSc patients, anti-U1RNP antibodies are associated with a higher incidence of overlap syndrome, a distinct clinical phenotype, and poorer survival compared to SSc-RNP- and MCTD patients. Our study suggests that SSc-RNP+ patients should be separated from MCTD patients and may constitute an enriched population for progressive lung disease.PMID:38642508 | DOI:10.1016/j.jaut.2024.103220 (Source: Journal of Autoimmunity)

Prevalence and prognostic meaning of interstitial lung abnormalities in remote CT scans of patients with interstitial lung disease treated with antifibrotic therapy
CONCLUSIONS: Fibrotic ILAs are frequent in remote scans of patients with clinically relevant ILD, long before they require antifibrotics. Findings of traction bronchiectasis and honeycombing in the earliest scans, even in asymptomatic patients, are related to mortality and progression later on.PMID:38642956 | DOI:10.1016/j.rxeng.2023.03.006 (Source: Radiologia)
