The diagnosis of ADHD in children and adolescents with epilepsy: a scoping review
Child Neuropsychol. 2024 Apr 8:1-33. doi: 10.1080/09297049.2024.2337954. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAttention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is often diagnosed in children and adolescents with epilepsy, but clear clinical guidelines on how to make this diagnosis are still lacking. Without these guidelines, there is no consensus between specialists on how to proceed when assessing children with epilepsy for ADHD, which can negatively impact the quality of care being offered to this population. As a first step toward gaining more specific clinical guidelines, this scoping review was aimed at documenting the tools a...

Association of congenital heart disease and neurodevelopmental disorders: an observational and Mendelian randomization study
ConclusionsOur study shows that children with CHD have an increased risk of developing NDDs. Heart conditions currently and severity of current heart conditions were also significantly associated with these NDDs. In the future, we need to try more methods to clarify the causal relationship between CHD and NDDs. (Source: Italian Journal of Pediatrics)

Feasibility and Acceptability of a Trauma-informed Intervention to Leverage Caregivers in Preventing Opioid Use Among Youth Involved in the Legal System
AbstractYouth in the legal system (YILS) report high rates of substance use (SU), complex family/social relationships, and chronic trauma. The current study tested the feasibility of a prevention intervention, Trust-based Relational Intervention ® (TBRI®), that leverages family systems by strengthening connection and providing emotional and instrumental guidance and support. TBRI includes theprimary TBRI Intervention, comprised of Caregiver Training, Youth Training, and joint youth-caregiver Nurture Groups, andTBRI Family Coaching. With a sample of eight youth-caregiver dyads, the study adopted a mixed-methods design wit...

Identification of benzo[b]thiophene-1,1-dioxide derivatives as novel PHGDH covalent inhibitors
Bioorg Chem. 2024 Apr 3;146:107330. doi: 10.1016/j.bioorg.2024.107330. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe increased de novo serine biosynthesis confers many advantages for tumorigenesis and metastasis. Phosphoglycerate dehydrogenase (PHGDH), a rate-limiting enzyme in serine biogenesis, exhibits hyperactivity across multiple tumors and emerges as a promising target for cancer treatment. Through screening our in-house compound library, we identified compound Stattic as a potent PHGDH inhibitor (IC50 = 1.98 ± 0.66 µM). Subsequent exploration in structural activity relationships led to the discovery of compound B12 that demon...

Voluntary wheel exercise improves glymphatic clearance and ameliorates colitis-associated cognitive impairment in aged mice by inhibiting TRPV4-induced astrocytic calcium activity
CONCLUSION: The present study reveals a novel role of voluntary exercise in alleviating colitis-related cognitive impairment and anxiety disorder, which is mediated by the promotion of AQP4 polarization and glymphatic clearance of Aβ via inhibition of TRPV4-induced astrocytic calcium hyperactivity.PMID:38580155 | DOI:10.1016/j.expneurol.2024.114770 (Source: Experimental Neurology)

Substance use and adolescent mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil: a longitudinal approach
CONCLUSIONS: Despite the extensive decline in substance use during the pandemic period, these results suggest an association between previous mental health conditions and behavioral risk factors, leading to increased alcohol consumption and behavioral disorders manifestations.PMID:38580211 | DOI:10.1016/j.jped.2024.01.005 (Source: Jornal de Pediatria)

Prenatal particulate matter exposure is linked with neurobehavioural development in early life
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that prenatal exposure to PM may impact neurobehavioural development in newborns and preschool children. We identified sensitive time windows during early-to-mid pregnancy, possibly impacting stage changes in newborns and peer problems and prosocial behaviour in children.PMID:38579996 | DOI:10.1016/j.envres.2024.118879 (Source: Environmental Research)

Novel rat model of gaming disorder: assessment of social reward and sex differences in behavior and c-Fos brain activity
ConclusionsThe proposal of a new GD rat model could represent an innovative tool to investigate, in both sexes, the behavioral and neurobiological features of this disorder, the possible role of external factors in the predisposition and susceptibility and the development of new pharmacological therapies. Family History of Treatment-Resistant Depression May Be Risk Factor for Antidepressant Resistance
Individuals with a family history of treatment-resistant depression (TRD) have an increased risk of experiencing antidepressant resistance themselves, astudy published yesterday inJAMA Psychiatry found. Further, individuals with a family history of TRD have a greater risk of other psychiatric illnesses and dying by suicide.“In recent years, an increasing number of genetic studies have attempted to understand the genetic architecture of antidepressant response or TRD phenotype,” wrote Chih-Ming Cheng, M.D., of the Taipei Veterans General Hospital in Taiwan and colleagues. “Although the efforts to understand the g enet...

The relationship between game genre, monetization strategy and symptoms of gaming disorder in a clinical sample of adolescents
CONCLUSIONS: This study reveals that game genre preference is influenced by sex, age, and certain psychiatric diagnoses. The categorizing of games into genres is increasingly complex and our research introduces a novel categorization in a developing research field. The result of this study suggests that the monetization model is important to consider while trying to understand the relationship between game characteristics and GD symptoms.PMID:38571884 | PMC:PMC10989217 | DOI:10.48101/ujms.v129.10386 (Source: Upsala Journal of Medical Sciences)
