Integrating Structural and Experiential Family Therapy in Neurodivergent Families: A Case Study
Issues Ment Health Nurs. 2024 Apr 9:1-11. doi: 10.1080/01612840.2024.2328260. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAutism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is widely regarded as the most severe childhood behavioral disorder. However, society's lack of awareness regarding neurodevelopmental disorders, like autism, has led to a limited understanding of their profound impact on children and their families. Challenges include unique sensory experiences, communication and social interactions, strain on familial relationships, emotional toll on parents, and educational hurdles, which can significantly impact the well-being of individuals and the...

A meta-analysis of randomized sham-controlled trials of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder
CONCLUSIONS: Our study only supported the therapeutic efficacy of rTMS targeting rPFC for the symptoms of ADHD, especially inattention, but not that targeting lPFC. Further large-scale randomized sham-controlled trials are required to verify our findings.PMID:38593057 | DOI:10.47626/1516-4446-2023-3428 (Source: Revista Brasileira de Psiquiatria)

Randomized clinical trial evaluating the effect of metacognitive interventions on planning skills in children with attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) with mixed symptom presentation. Pilot trial design
CONCLUSIONS: In the children who did not participate in the training, the score worsened, while the score of children in the experimental groups was unchanged.PMID:38593319 | DOI:10.12740/PP/OnlineFirst/163595 (Source: Psychiatria Polska)

Trimethylamine-N-oxide aggravated the sympathetic excitation in D-galactose induced aging rats by down-regulating P2Y12 receptor in microglia
This study aimed to determine whether trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) was involved in sympathetic activation in aging and the underlying mechanisms. Our hypothesis is TMAO reduces P2Y12 receptor (P2Y12R) and induces microglia-mediated inflammation in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN), then leading to sympathetic activation in aging. This study involved 18 young adults and 16 old adults. Aging rats were established by injecting D-galactose (D-gal, 200 mg/kg/d) subcutaneously for 12 weeks. TMAO (120 mg/kg/d) or 1% 3, 3-dimethyl-l-butanol (DMB) was administrated via drinking water for 12 weeks to investigate their effects on ne...

Metal nanoparticle-induced effects on green toads (Amphibia, Anura) under climate change: conservation implications
In this study, we investigated the survival, developmental, behavioral, and histological reactions of Bufotes viridis embryos and larvae exposed to different NPs for a duration of 10 days, using lethal concentrations (LC25%, LC50%, and LC75% mg/L) under both ambient (AT: 18 °C) and high (HT: 21 °C) temperatures. Based on LC, NiONPs > ZnONPs > CuONPs > Al2O3NPs > TiO2NPs > Fe3O4NPs showed the highest mortality at AT. A similar pattern was observed at HT, although mortality occurred at lower concentrations and Fe3O4NPs were more toxic than TiO2NPs. The results indicated that increasing concentrations of NPs ...

Current Complexities in Establishing Risk Factors for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Longitudinal Research
A long-term goal of psychiatric research is to understand the process by which psychiatric disorders develop over time and lead to impairing symptoms. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), as defined in diagnostic manuals, is a prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder that often begins in childhood and includes persistent symptoms of hyperactivity, inattention, and impulsiveness. Longitudinal studies of ADHD trajectories support the notion that ADHD symptoms begin early in life but that patterns of symptoms vary across development (1,2). (Source: Biological Psychiatry)

Revisiting the Relative Contribution of Common and Rare Genetic Variants to Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Among Diverse Populations
Polygenic risk score (PRS) represents a groundbreaking advancement in personalized medicine, offering a nuanced and predictive tool for assessing an individual ’s susceptibility to polygenic diseases based on their genetic makeup by aggregating the small effects of many common variants. However, the application of PRS in neuropsychiatric disorders is limited due to the challenges in achieving clinical utility in general medical settings (1). Copy number variants (CNVs) are deletions or duplications of sections of DNA that often result in changes in gene dosage. (Source: Biological Psychiatry)

The diagnosis of ADHD in children and adolescents with epilepsy: a scoping review
Child Neuropsychol. 2024 Apr 8:1-33. doi: 10.1080/09297049.2024.2337954. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAttention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is often diagnosed in children and adolescents with epilepsy, but clear clinical guidelines on how to make this diagnosis are still lacking. Without these guidelines, there is no consensus between specialists on how to proceed when assessing children with epilepsy for ADHD, which can negatively impact the quality of care being offered to this population. As a first step toward gaining more specific clinical guidelines, this scoping review was aimed at documenting the tools a...

Association of congenital heart disease and neurodevelopmental disorders: an observational and Mendelian randomization study
ConclusionsOur study shows that children with CHD have an increased risk of developing NDDs. Heart conditions currently and severity of current heart conditions were also significantly associated with these NDDs. In the future, we need to try more methods to clarify the causal relationship between CHD and NDDs. (Source: Italian Journal of Pediatrics)
