Immunohistochemical characterization of a steroid secreting oncocytic adrenal carcinoma responsible for paraneoplastic hyperparathyroidism
We report a unique case of a 44-year-old man with paraneoplastic hyperparathyroidism due to an oncocytic adrenocortical carcinoma (stage pT3N0R0M0, ENSAT 2 with a 4% Ki-67). Paraneoplastic hyperparathyroidism was associated with mild ACTH-independent hypercortisolism and increased estradiol secretion responsible for gynecomastia and hypogonadism. Biological investigations performed in blood samples from peripheral and adrenal veins revealed that the tumor secreted PTH and estradiol. Ectopic PTH secretion was confirmed by abnormally high expression of PTH mRNA and clusters of PTH immunoreactive cells in the tumor tissue. Do...

Genes, Vol. 14, Pages 647: The Klinefelter Syndrome and Testicular Sperm Retrieval Outcomes
ousa Klinefelter syndrome (KS), caused by the presence of an extra X chromosome, is the most prevalent chromosomal sexual anomaly, with an estimated incidence of 1:500/1000 per male live birth (karyotype 47,XXY). High stature, tiny testicles, small penis, gynecomastia, feminine body proportions and hair, visceral obesity, and testicular failure are all symptoms of KS. Endocrine (osteoporosis, obesity, diabetes), musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, autoimmune disorders, cancer, neurocognitive disabilities, and infertility are also outcomes of KS. Causal theories are discussed in addition to hormonal characteristics and tes...

Increased Morbidity in Males Diagnosed with Gynecomastia: A nationwide register-based cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: The presence of idiopathic gynecomastia is an important first clinical symptom of an underlying disease and a significant predictor of future disease risk. These findings should stimulate more awareness among health care providers to increase identification of gynecomastia and its causes in males.PMID:36718997 | DOI:10.1210/clinem/dgad048 (Source: The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism)

Integrating the Fast-Track surgery concept into the surgical treatment of gynecomastia
Conclusions: The proposed fast-track pathway is feasible for surgical treatment of gynecomastia, leading to an enhanced recovery and high patient satisfaction without increasing the rate of complications. The fast-track surgery concept with implementation of local anesthetic techniques should be given serious consideration in gynecomastia management.PMID:36650940 | DOI:10.1080/2000656X.2023.2166946 (Source: Hand Surgery)

Extracardiac findings with increased perfusion during clinical O-15-H2O PET/CT myocardial perfusion imaging: A case series
ConclusionsMalignant and benign extracardiac coincidental findings with increased perfusion are readily visible and frequently seen on O-15-H2O PET MPI. We recommend evaluating the summed O-15-H2O PET images in addition to the low-dose CT attenuation images. (Source: Journal of Nuclear Cardiology)

Anabolic –androgenic steroids: How do they work and what are the risks?
Anabolic–androgenic steroids (AAS) are a class of hormones that are widely abused for their muscle-building and strength-increasing properties in high, nontherapeutic, dosages. This review provides an up-to-date and comprehensive overview on how these hormones work and what side effects they might elicit. We discuss how AAS are absorbed into the circulation after intramuscular injection or oral ingestion and how they are subsequently transported to the tissues, where they will move into the extravascular compartment and diffuse into their target cells. Inside these cells, AAS can biotransform into different metabolites o...
