Management of Pediatric Acute Mastoiditis in Israel: Nationwide Survey Among Otorhinolaryngologists and Emergency Pediatricians
Conclusions The management of pediatric AM is generally similar by both disciplines. The use of imaging studies is mild-moderate. We call for a national registry and encourage the publication of guidelines. (Source: Pediatric Emergency Care)

Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis Manifesting as Refractory Otitis Media and Mastoiditis.
We present a middle-aged white male who exemplifies this unique presentation with new onset recurrent otitis media and mastoiditis, which did not respond to repeated courses of antibiotics requiring mastoidectomy and myringotomy tube placement. On chest x-ray, he was found to have multiple lung nodules that was followed by a computed tomography (CT) scan of his chest and CT guided biopsy which revealed granulomatous inflammation and necrosis, consistent with GPA. Autoimmune laboratory work-up was also suggestive of GPA. The patient had complete resolution of symptoms with steroid therapy. This case reinforces the concept o...

Effect of vascular endothelial growth factor and its receptors in adult otitis media with effusion
ConclusionsVEGF and its receptors function to induce the production of middle-ear effusions (MEEs) at acute stage of OME rather than chronic or recurrent stage, which is mainly mediated by HIF-1 α pathway. The formation of mucoid effusions is associated with MUC5B and VEGFR2, but not with duration and recurrence of OME. (Source: European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology)

Management of Acute Mastoiditis With Immediate Needle Aspiration for Subperiosteal Abscess
Conclusions: Conservative management of AM, involving prompt myringotomy for all patients and PANA for SPA, is safe and effective, and reduces the need for CT and CM. Conservative management obviates unnecessary radiation, general anesthesia, and surgery, without increasing the risk of immediate or long-term complications. (Source: Otology and Neurotology)

Aural fullness and transtympanic ventilation tubes in M énière's disease: a scoping review.
CONCLUSION: There is a paucity of evidence investigating the effect of grommet insertion on aural fullness in Ménière's disease. This work directs future research into this topic. PMID: 31172892 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Journal of Laryngology and Otology)

Contribution of the Use of a Pen-Type Endoscope to Evaluate and Treat Ears Simultaneously During Cleft Palate Surgery in Late Presented Cases
Conclusion: The pen-type camera instead of an operating microscope was a tremendous contribution, as it was easy to handle and contributed to the good outcomes. The use of this technique is strongly recommended in surgical camps. Level of Evidence: III (Source: Journal of Craniofacial Surgery)

Gradenigo's syndrome in a four-year-old patient: a rare diagnosis in the modern antibiotic era.
CONCLUSION: This study presents a rare case of petrous apicitis managed surgically without the need for a craniotomy or transcochlear procedure. PMID: 31134874 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Journal of Laryngology and Otology)

Healthcare burden among individuals with Angelman syndrome: Findings from the Angelman Syndrome Natural History Study
ConclusionsThis study shows that individuals with AS have high HRU/STU, and apart from a few differences, HRU/STU was similar across molecular etiology. These results reflect usage in younger individuals and studies that describe HRU/STU in older individuals are needed. (Source: Molecular Genetics & Genomic Medicine)

Principal Factors Associated With Ketorolac-Refractory Pain Behavior After Pediatric Myringotomy and Pressure Equalization Tube Placement: A Retrospective Cohort Study.
CONCLUSIONS: Pain behavior after BMT varies by surgeon and is strongly associated with ear condition. Ketorolac as a single prophylactic analgesic appears less effective in younger children with normal middle ear findings. Assessing ototoxicity and patients' satisfaction of topical local anaesthesia in myringotomy and ventilation tube insertion.
CONCLUSION: The results suggest that sensorineural hearing loss is not a complication of ear exposure to topical local anaesthesia during myringotomy and ventilation tube insertion. The procedure was well perceived. PMID: 30935435 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Journal of Laryngology and Otology)

Effects of an enrofloxacin-silver sulfadiazine emulsion in the ears of rabbits with perforated tympanic membranes.
CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results supported that ESS has ototoxic effects in the middle ear of rabbits. Further research is needed to confirm these findings. Myringotomized laboratory rabbits may be useful to study ototoxicity of drugs used in human medicine. PMID: 30919672 [PubMed - in process] (Source: American Journal of Veterinary Research)

Grommets in otitis media: a 25-year follow up.
CONCLUSION AND SIGNIFICANCE: The insertion of a grommet in treating OME has no influence on hearing acuity in the long term. The prevalence of myringosclerosis and atrophy was unchanged in 70-80% of the eardrums. Most important is that the small increase in myringosclerosis and atrophy does not seem to influence the hearing acuity. We show that long term sequelae from the Primary Health Sector are similar to those from the Secondary Health sector. Bacteriology and cytology of otic exudates in 41 cavalier King Charles spaniels with primary secretory otitis media.
CONCLUSIONS: The role of bacteria in the pathogenesis of PSOM in CKCS is unclear. The majority of the EEC and ME of the CKCS with PSOM were negative by conventional bacterial culture and the cytological presence of bacteria was not correlated with culture positives. The potential role of noncultivable microbiota in PSOM requires exploration using molecular methods. PMID: 30644141 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Veterinary Dermatology)
