Outcomes of examination under anaesthesia of post-nasal space and grommet insertion in adults presenting with otitis media with effusion
CONCLUSION: Grommets in adults with otitis media with effusion as the sole presenting feature carry a high complication rate, especially in those with previously inserted grommets. Examination under anaesthesia of the post-nasal space offers a low yield. A magnetic resonance imaging scan of the post-nasal space may be a more sensitive alternative.PMID:34078484 | DOI:10.1017/S0022215121001444 (Source: Journal of Laryngology and Otology)

Training in endoscopic ear surgery using the papaya petiole
CONCLUSION: The hollow structure of the papaya petiole model is very similar to that of the external auditory canal, making training in endoscopic ear surgery easy. Use of the model helps a beginner to train in endoscopic handling and microsurgical instrumentation, and improves depth perception. In addition, it does not require high-end facilities to store equipment or undertake the training at any given point in time.PMID:34030757 | DOI:10.1017/S0022215121001365 (Source: Journal of Laryngology and Otology)

Temporal Trends and Regionalization of Acute Mastoiditis Management in the United States
We described the patient- and hospital-level demographics of acute mastoiditis admissions and the frequency of complications. We evaluated the percentage of patients requiring surgical management. Binary logistic regression was performed to determine whether there was a significant increase in the percentage of patients treated at academic institutions. Results: The majority of patients were ≤40 years old (64.9%) and Elixhauser comorbidity index ≥4 (57.4%); 23.3% (SE 0.8%) presented with complications associated with acute mastoiditis, the most common of which was a subperiosteal abscess (11.5%, SE 0.7%). Among ...
