Question about abstract and application?
Hey everyone, My PI recently had an abstract accepted to DDW, but I am not the presenting author as my PI is. However, I am most likely going to be listed as the first or second author, while the abstract will be published supplement to GIE: Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. I was wondering if it would be okay to put this on my application for this upcoming cycle and if this would look good? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

4th year medical student with tons of free time and wants to do GI - how can I make the most of this year and start preparing?
I've applied to IM and gotten a good number of interviews, a handful of academic programs. Given that I'm not guaranteed to match at an academic place and really want to do GI, I want to do as much as I can during my free time now to get a head start. So far, I've done 2 GI rotations this year with a plan to do a 3rd later in the year. I've started working on 4 case reports to submit for presentation/publication. And I've started networking with GI faculty and fellows. I know this post... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Blakemore
First Blakemore attempt, couldn't get past the GE junction. I'd actually been researching this a bunch lately and tried all the tricks that I can think of. Lubed everything up really well, tried MacGills, tried using a bougie through the gastric side port for some rigidity. I advanced it up to 50 cm mark but the tip was still just above the diaphragm. GI wasn't able to advance it any further though. Any other thoughts? Feels bad man. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Liver Failure (Depakote) Medical Malpractice Lawsuit
Link to case here: Liver Failure [Medication-Induced] This case has an expert witness opinion from a GI doc. Patient was started on Depakote, LFTs were initially fine. Within 5 weeks she had a liver transplant. The expert notes that she had positive ASMA and ANA titers and homozygous positive for H63D hemochromatosis. Do these results suggest that there may be an alternative cause for her liver failure? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

How to Prepare for GI Fellowship
Hello all, I recently accepted a GI fellowship position outside the match and was wondering what I can do to start preparing. I am currently doing a chief year, and have not really had any clinical duties, so granted I am a little rusty taking about 4 months off. I was just wondering what resources most first year fellows use so I can start reviewing now while I have time. Thank you in advance for all the answers (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Muti disciplinary role?
I am a med student who did a elective rotation in GI. Loved the combination of procedures and cerebral thinking. But it seems In the actual world gi is mostly outpatient and tend to work independently in endoscopy centers with not much interaction with other specialities. How true is this? I really like inpatient gi where you consult and do procedures and make diagnosis no one has a clue of (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Learning materials for 1st year fellows
Hello, I am a 1st year GI fellow feeling completely clueless so far. I've been trying to read Sleisenger but it is dense and I'm not finding it practical. What are people using to study at this stage? I'm intrigued by DDSEP9 but it's still 300$ for a trainee for the books + qbanks. I don't mind paying for it but I am unable to even find even a preview on line before buying it. Is it a good ressource for building knowledge base at my stage? Or is it more a review for final year fellows... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Chronic abdominal pain and nausea?
I'm taking care of an outpatient patient: 60y/o woman with chronic abdominal pain with prior history of gastric bypass, appendectomy, incisional hernia repair. Her pain had been previously controlled with oxycodone 10mg a couple times a day, but recently less effective due to emesis. GI is following now, has her on Zofran, Reglan, Promethazine but the nausea is still pretty severe. Patient is cachectic and having trouble with PO intake. Utox is appropriate. I'm considering a Fentanyl patch... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Why don ’t we just start giving our own?
Dermpath didn’t ask pathology if it was ok to read skin cancers. Gastroenterologists didn’t ask surgeons if they could do colonoscopies. Neurologists didn’t ask if they could give TMZ. IR didn’t get permission to steal dozens of procedures and form their own specialty. Why don’t we just start giving radiosensitizing chemotherapy as part of our training. That could open the door to other systemic agents and then maybe we could work our way up from the bottom of the food chain and become a... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
