Molecules, Vol. 29, Pages 1831: Isolation of Extracellular Outer Membrane Vesicles (OMVs) from Escherichia coli Using EVscore47 Beads
In this study, EVscore47 multifunctional chromatography microspheres were synthesized and used to efficiently isolate functional OMVs from Escherichia coli. Through this technology, OMV loss can be kept to a minimum, and OMVs can be harvested using EVscore47 at 11-fold higher yields and ~13-fold higher purity than those achieved by means of ultracentrifugation. Based on the results presented here, we propose a novel EVscore47-based isolation of OMVs that is fast and scalable. (Source: Molecules)

DNA glycosylases provide antiviral defence in prokaryotes
Nature, Published online: 17 April 2024; doi:10.1038/s41586-024-07329-9A screen utilizing an environmental DNA library in Escherichia coli is used to identify Brig1, a previously unknown anti-phage defence system with homologues across distinct clades of bacteria. (Source: Nature AOP)

Activity assays of NnlA homologs suggest the natural product N-nitroglycine is degraded by diverse bacteria
Abstract Linear nitramines (R–N(R′)NO2; R′ = H or alkyl) are toxic compounds, some with environmental relevance, while others are rare natural product nitramines. One of these natural product nitramines is N-nitroglycine (NNG), which is produced by some Streptomyces strains and exhibits antibiotic activity towards Gram-negative bacteria. An NNG degrading heme enzyme, called NnlA, has recently been discovered in the genome of Variovorax sp. strain JS1663 (Vs NnlA). Evidence is presented that NnlA and therefore, NNG degradation activity is widespread. To achieve this objective, we characterized and tested t...

Effect of Non-Rotavirus Enteric Infections on Vaccine Efficacy in a ROTASIIL Clinical Trial
This study examined the relative proportion of enteric pathogens associated with severe gastroenteritis (GE) among children younger than 2 years in a phase III efficacy trial of the ROTASIIL® vaccine in India, evaluated the impact of co-infections on vaccine efficacy (VE), and characterized the association between specific pathogens and the clinical profile of severe GE. Stored stool samples collected from cases of severe GE in the phase III trial were tested by quantitative polymerase chain reaction using TaqMan™ Array Cards. Etiology was attributed by calculating the adjusted attributable fraction (AF) for each pathog...

Pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) derived from Leishmania and bacteria increase gene expression of antimicrobial peptides and gut surface proteins in sand flies
Int J Parasitol. 2024 Apr 14:S0020-7519(24)00075-4. doi: 10.1016/j.ijpara.2024.04.005. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe interaction between pathogens and vectors' physiology can impact parasite transmission. Studying this interaction at the molecular level can help in developing control strategies. We study leishmaniases, diseases caused by Leishmania parasites transmitted by sand fly vectors, posing a significant global public health concern. Lipophosphoglycan (LPG), the major surface glycoconjugate of Leishmania, has been described to have several roles throughout the parasite's life cycle, both in the insect and verteb...
