Carbapenem-producing Enterobacteriaceae in mothers and newborns in southeast Gabon, 2022
This study, conducted at Franceville hospital's maternity and neonatology wards from February 22nd to June 20th, 2022, investigated the prevalence of CPE in 197 parturients and 203 newborns. Rectal swabs were taken from parturients before delivery and from newborns 30 minutes after birth. Blood culture samples were collected if signs of infection were observed in newborns during a 28-day follow-up. A total of 152 environmental samples were obtained, comprising 18 from sinks, 14 from incubators, 27 from cradles, 39 from maternal beds, 14 from tables and desks, four from the two baby scales and 36 from bedside furniture.Resu...

Viruses, Vol. 16, Pages 85: Risk Factors Associated with Opportunistic Infections among People Living with HIV/AIDS and Receiving an Antiretroviral Therapy in Gabon, Central Africa
The objective of this study was to identify the risk factors that contributed to the onset of OIs in HIV patients undergoing ART in Gabon. Epidemiological and biological data were obtained from medical records (2017 to 2019) found at the outpatient treatment centre (CTA) of Franceville in Gabon. Samples for blood count, CD4, and viral load analysis at CIRMF were collected from PLWHA suffering from other pathogen-induced conditions. A survey was carried out and data were analysed using Rstudio 4.0.2 and Excel 2007 software. Biological and socio-demographic characteristics were examined concerning OIs through both a univaria...

Anopheles gambiae s.s. resistance to pyrethroids and DDT in semi-urban and rural areas of the Moyen-Ogoou é Province, Gabon
Pyrethroids are the main insecticides used in vector control for malaria. However, their extensive use in the impregnation of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) and indoor residual spraying has led to the ... (Source: Malaria Journal)

High prevalence of asymptomatic Anaplasma spp. infection in school-aged children in southeastern Gabon
The members of the Anaplasmataceae family are obligate intracellular Gram-negative bacteria with veterinary and public health importance [1]. The genera Anaplasma and Ehrlichia include species that cause anaplasmosis and ehrlichiosis, respectively, in humans and animals. Emerging infections with new Ehrlichia and Anaplasma species have become more frequently diagnosed as the cause of human infections, as animal reservoirs and tick vectors have increased in numbers and humans have inhabited areas where reservoir and tick populations are high [1]. HHV-6 infections in hospitalized young children of Gabon
ConclusionsAlthough tropical diseases account for a large proportion of children's hospitalizations, considering common childhood diseases such as HHV-6 when diagnosing febrile illnesses in pediatric populations in tropical countries is of importance. (Source: Infection)

Baseline gene signatures of reactogenicity to Ebola vaccination: a machine learning approach across multiple cohorts
In this study, we developed a machine learning approach to integrate prevaccination gene expression data with adverse events that occurred within 14 days post-vaccination.Results and DiscussionWe analyzed the expression of 144 genes across 343 blood samples collected from participants of 4 phase I clinical trial cohorts: Switzerland, USA, Gabon, and Kenya. Our machine learning approach revealed 22 key genes associated with adverse events such as local reactions, fatigue, headache, myalgia, fever, chills, arthralgia, nausea, and arthritis, providing insights into potential biological mechanisms linked to vaccine reactogenic...

Distribution of Aedes mosquito species along the rural –urban gradient in Lambaréné and its surrounding
Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti are known for their potential as vectors of dengue (DENV) and chikungunya (CHIKV) viruses. However, entomological surveys are mostly carried out during epidemics. In Gabon where... (Source: Parasites and Vectors)

First ‐ever Marburg virus disease outbreak in Equatorial Guinea and Tanzania: An imminent crisis in West and East Africa
The Marburg virus causes the severe infectious disease known as Marburg Virus Disease (MVD). Previously, different outbreaks of MVD have appeared in different African countries. For the first time, Equatorial Guinea and Tanzania are experiencing MVD outbreaks. In affected regions of Equatorial Guinea and Tanzania, surveillance and detection efforts, including contact tracing and active case finding, are recommended. AbstractThe Marburg virus, which is a member of the same virus family as the Ebola virus called Filoviridae, causes the severe infectious disease known as Marburg virus disease (MVD). Previously, different outb...

Efficacy, safety, and tolerability of albendazole and ivermectin based regimens for the treatment of microfilaraemic loiasis in adult patients in Gabon: A randomized controlled assessor blinded clinical trial
ConclusionThe 5-week regimen of albendazole or a 3-week regimen of albendazole followed by ivermectin were most efficacious to reduce microfilaraemia. All therapeutic regimens were well tolerated and safe. Trial registrationTrial registered at the Pan-African Clinical Trials Registry: PACTR201807197019027. (Source: PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases)

Status of blood transfusion safety in Cameroon
Cameroon is a Central African country on the east coast of the African continent with an area of 475.650km. It is bounded on the west by Nigeria, on the south by Congo, Gabon, and Equatorial Guinea, on the east by the Central African Republic, and on the northeast by Chad. A geographical diversity characterizes this Africa in "miniature". In 2020, Cameroon's current GDP (gross domestic product) was estimated at 1,500 $ gross national income (GNI) per capita (151th) with an annual growth rate of 5.9%. Towards the invasion of wild and rural forested areas in Gabon (Central Africa) by the Asian tiger mosquito Aedes albopictus: Potential risks from the one health perspective
CONCLUSIONS: We detected Ae. albopictus in gallery forest up to 15 km away from La Lopé village. However, Ae. albopictus was significantly more abundant at anthropogenic sites than in less anthropized areas. The number of eggs laid by Ae. albopictus decreased progressively with the distance from the forest fringe up to 200m inside the forest. Our results suggested that in forest ecosystems, high Ae. albopictus density is mainly observed at interfaces between anthropized and natural forested environments. Additionally, our data suggested that Ae. albopictus may act as a bridge vector of zoonotic pathogens between wild and ...
