Managing fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae): Experience from smallholder farmers in central and western Africa
In this study, 420 farmers were surveyed in central and west Africa using individual interviews to assess farmers' knowledges and perceptions of the fall armyworm damages and the management practices used. Most farmers (99.4%) were shown to recognize the fall armyworm and 92.5% claimed to already have damages in their fields. The fall armyworm seems not to be a new pest as most farmers identified it in different countries from 2015 to 2019. Apart from maize as the preferred crop ofS.  frugiperda, several alternative host plants including Napier grass, sorghum, onion, and cabbage were identified by the farmers. Although c...

Epidemiology of co-infections in pregnant women living with human immunodeficiency virus 1 in rural Gabon: a cross-sectional study
ConclusionsCounterintuitively, the crude odds for concomitant STIs was lower in HIV-positive than in HIV-negative women. The change of magnitude from the crude to adjustedOR is indicative for a differential sexual risk factor profile among HIV-positive and HIV-negative women in this population. This might potentially be explained by the availability of sexual health care counselling for HIV-positive women within the framework of the national HIV control programme, while no such similar overall service exists for HIV-negative women. This highlights the importance of easy access to sexual healthcare education programmes for ...

High-risk fertility behaviour and undernutrition among children under-five in sub-Saharan Africa: a cross-sectional study
Conclusion Countries in SSA are encouraged to address the issue of maternal age at birth less than 18, high parity, and shorter birth intervals in order to meet the Global Nutrition targets, which aim to achieve a 40% reduction in the number of stunted children under the age of 5 and to reduce and maintain childhood wasting to less than 5% by 2025. Sociodemographics, Clinical Factors, and Biological Factors Associated with Loiasis in Endemic Onchocerciasis Areas in Southern Gabon
Am J Trop Med Hyg. 2023 Jun 20:tpmd220558. doi: 10.4269/ajtmh.22-0558. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTo implement the appropriate strategies for scale-up interventions to eliminate onchocerciasis without severe adverse events, clinical and biological factors associated with loiasis were analyzed in onchocerciasis-endemic areas. Blood was collected from volunteers after examination by a physician. Detection of microfilariae and measurement of Ov16 IgG4 were performed using direct microscopic examination of blood and onchocerciasis rapid test detection, respectively. Areas with sporadic, hypoendemic, and hyperendemic onchoce...
