Viruses, Vol. 14, Pages 2808: Human T-Cell Leukemia Virus Type 1-Related Diseases May Constitute a Threat to the Elimination of Human Immunodeficiency Virus, by 2030, in Gabon, Central Africa
nga-Ondeme The Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) has adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end the HIV/AIDS epidemic by 2030. Several factors related to the non-suppression of HIV, including interruptions of antiretroviral therapy (ART) and opportunistic infections could affect and delay this projected epidemic goal. Human T-Cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) appears to be consistently associated with a high risk of opportunistic infections, an early onset of HTLV-1 and its associated pathologies, as well as a fast progression to the AIDS phase in co-infected individuals, when compared to...

Epid émiology of malaria from 2019 to 2021 in the southeastern city of Franceville, Gabon
In Gabon, a new national malaria control policy was implemented in 2003. It resulted in a decrease in the number of malaria cases in the country. In March 2020, the disruption of routine health services due to... (Source: BMC Public Health)

Long-term validation of a reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP) assay for the rapid detection of SARS-CoV-2 from March 2020 to October 2021 in Central Africa, Gabon
ConclusionsThis long-term validation study clearly demonstrated the applicability of the RT-LAMP assay for the clinical diagnosis of COVID-19 in resource-limited settings of Africa, such as rural areas in Gabon. The results show the potential of the assay as a promising COVID-19 diagnostic method, especially in rural and remote regions located far from the official diagnosis facilities in urban or semi-urban areas. Phytochemical study and anti-radical activity of extracts from the oil seeds of Desbordesia glaucescens (Engl.)Tiegh. from Gabon
The report focused on the extraction of oilseeds of Desbordesia glaucescens (Engl.) Tiegh. from Gabon as well as on the phytochemical study and evaluation of the anti-free radical activity of the extracts obtained. The extraction was carried out by cold maceration with solvents of increasing polarities: hexane, tricholroethylene, acetone, ethanol and distilled water. The anti-free radical ac... A parasite makes wolves more likely to become pack leaders
Toxoplasma gondii is sometimes called the “mind control” parasite: It can infect the brains of animals and mess with their behavior in ways that may kill the host but help ensure the parasite’s spread. But now, researchers have found that infected wolves may actually benefit from those mind-altering tricks. A Toxoplasma infection, they found, makes wolves bolder and more likely to become pack leaders or disperse into other habitats, giving them more opportunity to reproduce. "We’ve really underestimated some of the consequences this parasite has,” says Eben Gering, a biologist at Nova Southea...

Molecules, Vol. 27, Pages 7966: Wound Healing Potential of an Oleoresin Essential Oil Chemotype from Canarium schweinfurthii Engl.
This study was conducted to investigate the chemical composition of essential oil (EO) extracted from an oleoresin of Canarium schweinfurthii widespread in the Gabonese tropical forest. A great variability in the chemical composition of EO was observed, among which a chemical profile rich in terpinolene and α-phellandrene (31.2 and 21.8%, respectively), was found and tested as a natural active ingredient for topical applications. After the evaluation of eye and skin irritancy and sensitization potentials of EO on in vitro and in chemico models, the in vitro modulating potential on a model of wound re-epitheli...

Sensors, Vol. 22, Pages 8466: Radio Astronomical Antennas in the Central African Region to Improve the Sampling Function of the VLBI Network in the SKA Era?
es Zambou On the African continent, South Africa has world-class astronomical facilities for advanced radio astronomy research. With the advent of the Square Kilometre Array project in South Africa (SA SKA), six countries in Africa (SA SKA partner countries) have joined South Africa to contribute towards the African Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) Network (AVN). Each of the AVN countries aims to construct a single-dish radio telescope that will be part of the AVN, the European VLBI Network, and the global VLBI network. The SKA and the AVN will enable very high sensitivity VLBI in the southern hemisphere. In th...

Effectiveness of antimalarial drug combinations in treating concomitant urogenital schistosomiasis in malaria patients in Lambar éné, Gabon: A non-randomised event-monitoring study
ConclusionsAntimalarial treatments with artesunate-pyronaridine and artemether-lumefantrine reduced the excretion ofS.haematobium eggs, comforting the hypothesis that antimalarial drugs could play a role in the control of schistosomiasis. Trial RegistrationThis trial is registered with clinicaltrials.gov, under the Identifier NCT04264130. (Source: PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases)

Resistance patterns among drug-resistant tuberculosis patients and trends-over-time analysis of national surveillance data in Gabon, Central Africa
ConclusionThe increasing incidence of MDR-TB infection in Gabon is alarming. It is highest in the 25 –35 years age category. The incidence of MDR-TB infection in treatment-naïve patients calls for case finding and contact tracing strategy improvement. (Source: Infection)
