Social inequality in prevalence of NCD risk factors: a cross-sectional analysis from the population-based Tromso Study 2015-2016
Conclusion We found statistically significant educational gradients in women and men for all WHO-established leading NCD risk factors within a Nordic middle-aged to older general population. The prevalence of all risk factors increased at lower educational levels, except for harmful alcohol use, which increased at higher educational levels. (Source: BMJ Open)

Role of diet in the risks of esophageal adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma: an updated umbrella review
ConclusionsThis umbrella review highlighted convincing evidence regarding the associations of areca nut and high alcohol with a higher risk of ESCC. Additionally, an association between vitamin B6 and a decreased risk of EAC was observed. Further research is needed to examine the dietary factors with weak evidence regarding their associations with ESCC and EAC. (Source: European Journal of Nutrition)

Bioassay-Guided Isolation and Identification of Cytotoxic Compounds from < em > Melaleuca quinquenervia < /em > Fruits
ACS Omega. 2024 Apr 11;9(16):18516-18525. doi: 10.1021/acsomega.4c00769. eCollection 2024 Apr 23.ABSTRACTThe fruit extract of Melaleuca quinquenervia yielded a total of 19 compounds, including two novel spiro-biflavonoid enantiomers (1a and 1b) and a chalcone derivative (3). Their structures were determined through spectroscopic analysis. The enantiomers of the racemic mixture of compound 1 were successfully resolved into (+)-1 and (-)-1 using chiral-phase HPLC. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis was also used to confirm the structure of 1. The enantiomeric configurations of 1 and 2 were determined through a compari...

Preclinical safety evaluation of the ethanolic extract from < em > campomanesia guazumifolia < /em > (cambess.) O. Berg fruits peels in rats
Nat Prod Res. 2024 Apr 29:1-5. doi: 10.1080/14786419.2024.2347447. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe toxicological potential of the ethanolic extract from Campomanesia guazumifolia (EECG), a species traditionally recognised for its antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory and hypercholesterolemic properties, was investigated in acute and subacute toxicity models in rats. In the acute toxicity test, 2000 mg/kg of EECG was administered orally in female rats, while male and female rats received 250, 500 or 750 mg/kg of EECG for the subacute toxicity test. No evidence of toxicity was observed in the animals acutely exposed, indicating ...

Association of Habitual Green Tea Consumption with Sarcopenia Assessed Using SARC-F in Community-Dwelling Japanese Older People: A Cross-Sectional Study
In this study of 364 participants (154 men and 210 women), the prevalence of sarcopenia risk was 9.3%. The multivariable-adjusted OR [95% CI] of green tea consumption for ≥1 cup/d compared with that of <1 cup/wk of sarcopenia was 0.312 [0.129-0.752]. Higher habitual green tea consumption was inversely associated with sarcopenia among Japanese older adults. Further longitudinal studies are required to confirm these findings.PMID:38684381 | DOI:10.3177/jnsv.70.117 (Source: Journal of Nutritional Science and Vitaminology)

The Potential Role of Phytochemicals of < em > Juniperus procera < /em > in the Treatment of Ovarian Cancer and the Inhibition of Human Topoisomerase II Alpha Activity
Bioinform Biol Insights. 2024 Apr 25;18:11779322241248904. doi: 10.1177/11779322241248904. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTA variety of active chemicals found in medicinal plants can be used to develop new medications with few adverse effects. In vitro and in silico analyses were used to evaluate the anticancer properties of Juniperus procera fruit and leaf extracts. Here, we show that the methanolic extract from J procera fruit and leaf extracts inhibits 2 human ovarian cancer cell lines, A2780CP and SKOV-3. The leaf extract demonstrated strong cytotoxicity against A2780CP with an IC50 of 1.2 μg/mL, almost matching the IC50 of ...

Sustainable synthesis of spongy-like porous carbon for supercapacitive energy storage systems towards pollution control
In this study, the fruit of Terminalia chebula, commonly known as chebulic myrobalan, is used as the precursor for carbon for its application in supercapacitors. The Terminalia chebula biomass-derived sponge-like porous carbon (TC-SPC) is synthesized using a facile and economical method of pyrolysis. TC-SPC thus obtained is subjected to XRD, FESEM, TEM, HRTEM, XPS, Raman spectroscopy, ATR-FTIR, and nitrogen adsorption-desorption analyses for their structural and chemical composition. The examination revealed that TC-SPC has a crystalline nature and a mesoporous and microporous structure accompanied by a disordered carbon f...

TACO: A Turkish database for abstract concepts
Behav Res Methods. 2024 Apr 29. doi: 10.3758/s13428-024-02428-x. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe organization of abstract concepts reflects different dimensions, grounded in the brain regions coding for the corresponding experience. Normative measures of linguistic stimuli offer noteworthy insights into the organization of conceptual knowledge, but studies differ in the dimensions and classes of concepts considered. Additionally, most of the available information has been collected in English, without considering possible linguistic and cultural differences. Here, we aimed to create a comprehensive Turkish database for a...
