Novel pit and fissure sealant with nano-CaF < sub > 2 < /sub > and antibacterial monomer: Fluoride recharge, microleakage, sealing ability and cytotoxicity
The objectives of this study were to: (1) develop a novel bioactive sealant containing calcium fluoride nanoparticles (nCaF2) and antibacterial dimethylaminohexadecyl methacrylate (DMAHDM), and (2) investigate mechanical performance, F recharge and re-release, microleakage, sealing ability and cytotoxicity. Helioseal F served as commercial control. The initial F release from sealant containing 20% nCaF2 was 25-fold that of Helioseal F. After ion exhaustion and recharge, the F re-release from bioactive sealant did not decrease with increasing number of recharge and re-release cycles. Elastic modulus of new bioactive sealant...

Species selective concentration and determination of nano-selenium and inorganic selenium species in environmental waters by micropore membrane filtration and ICP-MS
In this study, a micropore membrane filtration-based method followed by ICP-MS analysis was proposed for the selective concentration and determination of nSe in the water column. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and nylon micropore filtration membranes were proven to efficiently capture nSe under optimal conditions (retention > 91.0 ± 0.87%). At the same time, ionic selenite and selenate could escape from the membranes, realizing the isolation of nSe and ionic Se species. The interference of dissolved organic matter (DOM) during separation can be resolved by adding Ca(II) ions, which can induce the formation of DOM aggre...

Protective effects of sodium butyrate on fluorosis in rats by regulating bone homeostasis and serum metabolism
In this study, a rat model of fluorosis induced by 100 mg/L sodium fluoride was used to investigate the impact of NaB on bone homeostasis and serum metabolomics. It was found that NaB significantly reduced the levels of bone resorption markers CTX-Ⅰ and TRACP-5B in fluorosis rats. Moreover, NaB increased calcium and magnesium levels in bone, while decreasing phosphorus levels. In addition, NaB improved various bone microstructure parameters, including bone mineral density (BMD), trabecular thickness (Tb. Th), trabecular bone separation (Tb. SP), and structural model index (SMI) in the femur. Notably, NaB intervention als...

Artificial Q-Grader: Machine Learning-Enabled Intelligent Olfactory and Gustatory Sensing System
In this study, an artificial Q-grader comprising surface-engineered zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films is developed as the artificial nose, tongue, and AI-based statistical data analysis as the artificial brain for identifying both aroma and flavor chemicals in coffee beans. A poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene)/ZnO thin film transistor (TFT)-based liquid sensor is the artificial tongue, and an Au, Ag, or Pd nanoparticles/ZnO nanohybrid gas sensor is the artificial nose. In order to classify the flavor of coffee beans (acetic acid (sourness), ethyl butyrate and 2-furanmethanol (sweetness), caffeine (bitterness)) and ...

On the Chemical Pathways Influencing the Effective Global Warming Potential of Commercial Hydrofluoroolefin Gases
ChemSusChem. 2024 Apr 4:e202400280. doi: 10.1002/cssc.202400280. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe enforcement of a global hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerant phase down led to the introduction of hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs) as a low Global Warming Potential (GWP) substitute, given their low atmospheric lifetime. However, to this date it is not fully clear the long-term atmospheric fate of HFOs primary degradation products: trifluoro acetaldehyde (TFE), trifluoro acetyl fluoride (TFF), and trifluoroacetic acid (TFA). It particularly concerns the possibility of forming HFC-23, a potent global warming agent. Although the atmos...

Molecules, Vol. 29, Pages 1638: Resource Recovery of Spent Lithium-Ion Battery Cathode Materials by a Supercritical Carbon Dioxide System
In this study, the supercritical (SC) CO2 was innovatively adapted to enable the recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) based on facilitating the interaction with a binder and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) co-solvent. The results show that the optimum experimental conditions to liberate the cathode particles are processing at a temperature of 70 °C and 80 bar pressure for a duration of 20 min. During the treatment, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) was dissolved in the SC fluid system and collected in the dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), as detected by the Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR). The liberat...

Application of Fenton chemistry in electrochemical determination of pyrophosphatase activity and fluoride
Talanta. 2024 Mar 31;274:125943. doi: 10.1016/j.talanta.2024.125943. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFenton chemistry has aroused widespread concern due to its application in the green oxidation and mineralization of organic wastes. Inorganic pyrophosphatase (PPase) catalyzes the hydrolysis of pyrophosphate ions (PPi) and provides a thermodynamic driving force for many biosynthetic reactions. Fluoride (F-) is widely applied to fight against tooth decay and reduce cavities. The electrochemical determination of PPase activity and F- was realized based on Fenton chemistry in this work. Glassy carbon electrode modified with poly...
