Identification of groundwater pollution sources and health risk assessment in the Fengshui mining area of Central Shandong, China
This study selected 47 groundwater samples from the Fengshui mining area in central Shandong Province, China, employing advanced hydrogeochemical techniques, positive matrix factorization (PMF), and Monte Carlo analysis methods, aimed at unveiling the characteristics, origins, and health risks of water pollutants. The results indicated that the majority of samples exhibited a slightly alkaline nature. Notably, the concentrations of fluoride (F-) and nitrate (NO3-) exceeded China's safety standards in 40.43% and 23.40% of the samples, respectively. Moreover, a water quality index (WQI) below 50 was observed in approximately...

Water quality and geochemical facie of high-altitude lakes in Tawang, Eastern Himalaya, India
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2024 Mar 5. doi: 10.1007/s11356-024-32712-4. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHigh-altitude lakes (HALs) can be used as a supplement or alternative source of water in areas where there is a water shortage. When these lakes are efficiently managed, they can supply more water resources to fulfil the increasing demand. Water quality assessment aids in the identification of adequate and safe drinking water sources. It minimizes threats to the public's health by making sure that lake water extraction fulfills safety and health regulations. Water quality and hydrogeochemical study was conducted on six HA...

Composite anode for fluoride-ion batteries using alloy formation and phase separation in charge and discharge processes
J. Mater. Chem. A, 2024, Advance Article DOI: 10.1039/D3TA07038G, PaperKei Nakayama, Hidenori Miki, Takashi Nakagawa, Kousuke Noi, Yoshihiro Sugawara, Shunsuke Kobayashi, Katsutoshi Sakurai, Hideki Iba, Akihide Kuwabara, Yuichi Ikuhara, Takeshi Abe For fluoride-ion batteries, (In + LaF3-based material) anodes are proposed, and reversible alloy formation during charge and discharge is demonstrated. Such formation helps shift the redox potentials of anodes to prevent electrolyte decomposition. To cite this article before page numbers are assigned, use the DOI form of citation above. Synthesis and characterization of functional calcium-phosphate-chitosan adsorbents for fluoride removal from water
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Feb 29:130553. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.130553. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFunctional calcium-phosphate-chitosan adsorbents for fluoride (F-) removal from water with different proportions of calcium (0.7 or 1.4 % w/v) were synthesized by: i) ionotropic gelation technique followed by drying in a convection oven (IGA) or freeze drying (FDA); ii) freeze-gelation followed by drying in a convection oven (FGA). Adsorbents were analyzed by SEM-EDX and FTIR- ATR. F- removal percentages higher than 45 % were obtained with calcium-phosphate-chitosan adsorbents for an initial F- concentration of 9.6 m...

Significant reduction of activity retention in the kidneys via optimized linker sequences in radiohybrid-based minigastrin analogs
ConclusionWe could show that the reduction of negative charges within the linker section of radiohybrid-based minigastrin analogs led to decreased activity levels in the kidneys at 24  h p.i., while maintaining a good tumor uptake. Thus, favorable tumor-to-kidney ratios were accomplished in vivo. However, further optimization has to be done in order to improve tumor retention and general biodistribution profile.Graphical abstract (Source: EJNMMI Research)

A comprehensive review of human health risks of arsenic and fluoride contamination of groundwater in the South Asia region
J Water Health. 2024 Feb;22(2):235-267. doi: 10.2166/wh.2023.082.ABSTRACTThe present study found that ∼80 million people in India, ∼60 million people in Pakistan, ∼70 million people in Bangladesh, and ∼3 million people in Nepal are exposed to arsenic groundwater contamination above 10 μg/L, while Sri Lanka remains moderately affected. In the case of fluoride contamination, ∼120 million in India, >2 million in Pakistan, and ∼0.5 million in Sri Lanka are exposed to the risk of fluoride above 1.5 mg/L, while Bangladesh and Nepal are mildly affected. The hazard quotient (HQ) for arsenic varied from 0 to 822 in ...

Risk factors for dental caries: A case study in peatlands and non-peatlands of West Kalimantan, Indonesia
The objective was to analyse risk factors for dental caries in communities living in peatlands and non-peatlands in West Kalimantan. The research is a causal comparative study with cross-sectional approach. The samples were chosen by purposive sampling technique among adolescents aged 17-27 years, who were domiciled in Pontianak City (peatland) and Bengkayang (non-peatland) all their lives. The results showed that dental caries is significantly correlated with debris in peatlands (rs = 0.289). On non-peatlands, dental caries is correlated with drinking water phosphate (rs = 0.313) and calculus (rs = 0.034). In West Kaliman...
