Delayed infections following polybutylate-coated polyester (Ethibond) suture frontalis suspension surgery for severe blepharoptosis
CONCLUSION: Frontalis suspension with Ethibond has an 8% incidence of delayed infections, with Staphylococcus aureus as the most common organism. The authors recommend early sling removal in all patients with infection and recommend consideration of an alternative material in the event of future revision surgery.PMID:38687955 | DOI:10.1080/01676830.2024.2338789 (Source: Orbit)

Advanced intraocular retinoblastoma: evolving criteria for group E disease (1)
Can J Ophthalmol. 2024 Apr 27:S0008-4182(24)00068-1. doi: 10.1016/j.jcjo.2024.03.005. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWith evolving criteria for classifying intraocular retinoblastoma (RB) from International Intraocular Retinoblastoma Classification (IIRC, 2005) to International Classification of Retinoblastoma (ICRB, 2006), there have been changes in the inclusion criteria for groups E eyes that have not been widely recognized. This brief review highlights issues with the current classification systems (ICRB and IIRC) and layouts a theoretical framework arguing for merging of 2 existing classifications into 1 and subdividin...

Effect of isoflurane anaesthetic time on ocular a-scan ultrasonography measures and their relationship to age and OCT measures in the guinea pig
This study shows that the depth of ocular components can change dramatically with anaesthesia. Researchers should therefore be wary of these concomitant effects and should employ adjustments to better render 'true' values.PMID:38685338 | DOI:10.1016/j.exer.2024.109914 (Source: Experimental Eye Research)

Eye movements reinstate remembered locations during episodic simulation
Cognition. 2024 Apr 29;248:105807. doi: 10.1016/j.cognition.2024.105807. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTImagining the future, like recalling the past, relies on the ability to retrieve and imagine a spatial context. Research suggests that eye movements support this process by reactivating spatial contextual details from memory, a process termed gaze reinstatement. While gaze reinstatement has been linked to successful memory retrieval, it remains unclear whether it supports the related process of future simulation. In the present study, we recorded both eye movements and audio while participants described familiar locations...

Cortical blindness after percutaneous vertebroplasty: a case report and comprehensive review of the literature
CONCLUSIONS: Percutaneous vertebroplasty, though helpful, carries a rare risk of cortical blindness. Surgeon awareness is crucial for informing patients of this potential complication.PMID:38687124 | DOI:10.1080/13554794.2024.2346984 (Source: Neurocase)

Pharmacogenomic Clinical Support Tools for the Treatment of Depression
CONCLUSIONS: The addition of these new data do not alter the recommendations of the 2018 report, or the advice of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, that the evidence does not support the use of currently available combinatorial PGx tools for treatment selection in major depressive disorder. Priority efforts for future studies and the development and testing of effective tools include fully blinded study designs, inclusion of promising genetic variants not currently included in any commercially available tests, and investigation of other uses of pharmacogenomics, such as estimating the likelihood of rare adverse drug e...

Rapid Visual Loss in a 75-year-old Veteran Diagnosed with Cataracts
Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) is a rare mitochondrial disorder that causes progressive vision loss in young males. Recent research shows that it can also affect older individuals. An interdisciplinary approach is crucial for early diagnosis and effective management. This case highlights the evolving landscape of LHON diagnosis and patient care. Has substantial relevance for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care (PALTC) settings. It emphasizes the crucial role of accurate diagnosis, interdisciplinary collaboration, and patient-centered care, vital for effective healthcare in these settings. (Source: Journal of the Americ...

Outcomes of cataract surgery in eyes with axial length > 33 mm
The prevalence of myopia is increasing at an alarming rate worldwide, especially in Asia, and is projected to affect half of the global population by 2050.1 High myopia is defined differently, but is commonly characterized by an axial length (AL) exceeding 26.0 mm.2 As the AL elongates, there are significant changes in ocular structures, which are closely associated with various sight-threatening complications, such as cataract, macular pathologies, choroidal neovascularization, retinal detachment (RD) and glaucoma. Retinal image quality through an operating microscope with wavefront shaping extended depth of focus intraocular lens in model eye
Multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) are frequently used after cataract extractions because they reduce the need for spectacles which is convenient for the daily lives of patients.1,2 Multifocal IOLs have either refractive or diffractive optical structures to create multiple focal points.3,4 However, the discontinuous focus created by the multifocal IOLs leads to postoperative dysphotopsia including glare and halos due to light scattering. Extended depth-of-focus (EDoF) IOLs have an elongated focal point which results in an increase in the depth of focus, and they are used for the optical treatment of eyes after cataract e...

Metformin for sepsis-associated AKI: a protocol for the Randomized Clinical Trial of the Safety and FeasibiLity of Metformin as a Treatment for sepsis-associated AKI (LiMiT AKI)
This study has been approved by the Institutional Review Board. All patients or surrogates will provide written consent prior to enrolment and any study intervention. Metformin is a widely available, inexpensive medication with a long track record for safety, which if effective would be accessible and easy to deploy. We describe the study methods using the Standard Protocol Items for Randomized Trials framework and discuss key design features and methodological decisions. LiMiT AKI will investigate the feasibility and safety of metformin in critically ill patients with sepsis at risk of SA-AKI, in preparation for a future ...

Sensors, Vol. 24, Pages 2891: Fast and Fault-Tolerant Passive Hyperbolic Localization Using Sensor Consensus
ár The accuracy of passive hyperbolic localization applications using Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) measurements can be severely compromised in non-line-of-sight (NLOS) situations. Consensus functions have been successfully used to provide robust and accurate location estimates in such challenging situations. In this paper, a fast branch-and-bound computational method for finding the global maximum of consensus functions is proposed and the global convergence property of the algorithm is mathematically proven. The performance of the method is illustrated by simulation experiments and real measurements. (Source: Sensors)
