The Qi of Body, Mind, and Spirit: A Contextual Perspective on the Elusive Nature of Qi
CONCLUSIONS: Qi-nature can vary among gross, subtle, and causal levels. These levels can coexist and overlap during treatments of patients. This tripartite explanation may represent the Oriental pictograms better and be consistent with the philosophical root of Chinese Medicine-the Tao.PMID:38659729 | PMC:PMC11036150 | DOI:10.1089/acu.2023.0071 (Source: Acupuncture in Medicine)

Histological Findings in the Eyes of Abcc6 Knockout Rat Model of Pseudoxanthoma Elasticum
DISCUSSION: The Abcc6-/- rat model shows that PXE can affect multiple ocular tissues beyond the calcification in Bruch's membrane noted in human eyes. Nodular calcific foci probably correspond to comet lesions seen in patients with PXE. The presence of ectopic calcium without inflammation distinguishes it from inflammatory calcium deposition in atherosclerosis. Further studies are needed to determine why PXE does not cause inflammatory infiltration.TRANSLATIONAL RELEVANCE: The Abcc6-/- murine model may be suitable for studying ocular PXE pathophysiology and ectopic calcification and developing effective therapies.PMID:3865...

Physiotherapy for continence and muscle function in prostatectomy: a randomised controlled trial
CONCLUSION: Supervised PFMT can improve postoperative UI and PFM function after RARP. Further studies are needed to confirm whether intra-anal pressure reflects PFM function and affects continence status in UI in men who have undergone RARP.PMID:38658057 | DOI:10.1111/bju.16369 (Source: Cancer Control)

Targeting inflammasomes and pyroptosis in retinal diseases-molecular mechanisms and future perspectives
Prog Retin Eye Res. 2024 Apr 22:101263. doi: 10.1016/j.preteyeres.2024.101263. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRetinal diseases encompass various conditions associated with sight-threatening immune responses and are leading causes of blindness worldwide. These diseases include age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and uveitis. Emerging evidence underscores the vital role of the innate immune response in retinal diseases, beyond the previously emphasized T-cell-driven processes of the adaptive immune system. In particular, pyroptosis, a newly discovered programmed cell death process involving inflam...

Sensors, Vol. 24, Pages 2718: Adaptation of Postural Sway in a Standing Position during Tilted Video Viewing Using Virtual Reality: A Comparison between Younger and Older Adults
This study aimed to investigate the effects of wearing virtual reality (VR) with a head-mounted display (HMD) on body sway in younger and older adults. A standing posture with eyes open without an HMD constituted the control condition. Wearing an HMD and viewing a 30°-tilt image and a 60°-tilt image in a resting standing position were the experimental conditions. Measurements were made using a force plate. All conditions were performed three times each and included the X-axis trajectory length (mm), Y-axis trajectory length (mm), total trajectory length (mm), trajectory length per unit time (mm/s), ...

Transcervical Excision of Mixed Laryngocele: A Case Report with Step-by-step Surgical Guide
AbstractLaryngocele is the benign cystic dilatation of the laryngeal saccule which is a blind pouch arising from the anterior roof of the laryngeal ventricle and ascends in the loose areolar tissue of the pre-epiglottic space posterior to the thyroid cartilage. It is a rare clinical entity. We, hereby report a case of mixed laryngocele who presented with complain of both swelling in the neck and change in voice who was treated with transcervical surgical excision. A step-by-step surgical guide to demonstrate intra-operative procedure such that it can be standardized and reproduced by any ENT surgeon was the underlying rati...

Prognostic indicators of corneal ulcer clinical outcomes at a tertiary care center in the Bronx, New York
ConclusionIdentification of risk factors associated with a poor clinical prognosis can guide treatment and inform expectations for patients diagnosed with a corneal ulcer. Our study highlights the importance of timely diagnosis, work-up, and initiation of appropriate management, particularly in vulnerable populations where access to specialty care is logistically challenging. Integrated machine learning and multimodal data fusion for patho-phenotypic feature recognition in iPSC models of dilated cardiomyopathy
Biol Chem. 2024 Apr 24. doi: 10.1515/hsz-2024-0023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIntegration of multiple data sources presents a challenge for accurate prediction of molecular patho-phenotypic features in automated analysis of data from human model systems. Here, we applied a machine learning-based data integration to distinguish patho-phenotypic features at the subcellular level for dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). We employed a human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocyte (iPSC-CM) model of a DCM mutation in the sarcomere protein troponin T (TnT), TnT-R141W, compared to isogenic healthy (WT) control iPSC-CMs. ...

The role of inflammation and antithrombin supplementation on thromboelastographic parameters during veno-venous ECMO for respiratory failure
CONCLUSIONS: High concentrations of systemic cytokines correlated with longer reaction times and decreased angle and amplitude at TEG, suggesting that an increase in inflammation is related with hypocoagulability as revealed by thromboelastography.PMID:38651578 | DOI:10.1177/02676591241237637 (Source: Perfusion)

Uveitis-Glaucoma-Hyphema Syndrome Secondary to Implantable Collamer Lens
Conclusion: We present the first published case worldwide about UGH syndrome secondary to ICL. This is an unusual complication, and measures can be taken to avoid it. This provides evidence of the importance of postoperative follow-up by the surgeon and appropriate work-up when such cases are suspected.PMID:38652606 | DOI:10.1080/09273948.2024.2342386 (Source: Ocular Immunology and Inflammation)

Adalimumab Dose Reduction and Withdrawal in Stable Non-Infectious Pediatric Uveitis: An Open-Label, Prospective, Pilot Study
CONCLUSIONS: In PNIU children who reached remission for 6 months, ADA dose reduction and withdrawal were associated with a high risk of inflammation recurrence. Timely adjustment of ADA to the last effective dosage frequency can regain control of the inflammation. Detection of ADA serum levels in patients with recurrence may help find the appropriate interval of ADA use.PMID:38652891 | DOI:10.1080/09273948.2024.2343084 (Source: Ocular Immunology and Inflammation)
