Anti-Acanthamoeba metallopharmaceuticals: Amoebicidal activity and synergistic effect of copper(II)  coordination compound
This study evaluates the amoebicidal activity of copper(II) coordination compounds in combination with chlorhexidine and the cytotoxicity to topical ocular application. These copper(II) coordination compounds were screened against Acanthamoeba castellanii trophozoites (ATCC 50492). The cytotoxicity on rabbit corneal cell line (ATCC-CCL 60) was performed. The compounds showed high amoebicidal potential, with inhibition of trophozoite viability above 80%. The Cp12 and Cp13 compounds showed Minimal Inhibitory Amoebicidal Concentration (MIAC) at 200 µM and mean inhibitory concentration (IC50) values lower than 10 µM. Against...

A PAX3 insertion in the Celestial breed and certain feline breeding lines with dominant blue eyes
Anim Genet. 2024 Apr 22. doi: 10.1111/age.13433. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDuring the last 60 years many inherited traits in domestic outbred cats were selected and retained giving birth to new breeds characterised by singular coat or morphological phenotypes. Among them, minimal white spotting associated with blue eyes was selected by feline breeders to create the Altai, Topaz, and Celestial breeds. Various established breeds also introduced this trait in their lineages. The trait, that was confirmed as autosomal dominant by breeding data, was first described in domestic cats from Kazakhstan and Russia, in British sho...

Characterization of central-involved diabetic macular edema using OCT and OCTA
CONCLUSIONS: CI-DME and CSME appear to represent different entities. Eyes with CI-DME show increases in abnormal retinal fluid associated with increased retinal vascular perfusion in the DCP. Eyes with CSME are apparently associated with decreased retinal vascular perfusion in the DCP and abnormal fluid in the outer retina.PMID:38644796 | DOI:10.1177/11206721241248478 (Source: European Journal of Ophthalmology)

Atypical case of choroidal osteoma associated to polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy and preretinal neovascular membrane
CONCLUSION: Our case report represents an exceptional and atypical association between pre-retinal neovascularization, PCV and choroidal osteoma. While the mechanisms underlying the development of PCV and pre-retinal neovascularization in the setting of CO are not well understood, it is imperative for ophthalmologists to recognize this association as a potential cause of sudden vision loss in patients with CO, and to consider appropriate diagnostic and management strategies.PMID:38644785 | DOI:10.1177/11206721241249218 (Source: European Journal of Ophthalmology)

Anterior transposition of the inferior oblique and anti-elevation syndrome - how far to go?
Conclusions: The anterior transposition of the inferior oblique with "J" deformity increases the risk of anti-elevation syndrome. Additionally, placing the sutures more anteriorly than 2 mm posterior to the inferior rectus insertion increases the incidence of this finding.PMID:38647121 | DOI:10.1080/09273972.2024.2338790 (Source: Strabismus)

Biomimetic Multifunctional Graphene ‐Based Coating for Thermal Management, Solar De‐Icing, and Fire Safety: Inspired from the Antireflection Nanostructure of Compound Eyes
Herein, inspired from the compound eyes to enhance the photo-thermal capability of graphene based on the Fresnel equation. An equilibrium temperature of ≈77 °C and rapid de-icing within ≈65 s are achieved. The synergetic flame retardant mechanism results in 58% and 28% decreases in heat release rate and total heat release. AbstractDue to the ubiquitous and inexhaustible solar source, photothermal materials have gained considerable attention for their potential in heating and de-icing. Nevertheless, traditional photothermal materials, exemplified by graphene, frequently encounter challenges emanating from their elevat...

Hypercapnic hypoxia as a rehabilitation method for patients after ischemic stroke
CONCLUSION: Respiratory training with hypercapnic hypoxia improves the functional state of the nervous system in patients with ischemic stroke. After conducting further clarifying studies, hypercapnic hypoxia can be considered as an effective method of neurorehabilitation, which can be used as early as 48-72 hours after the onset of stroke.PMID:38643375 | DOI:10.1080/01616412.2024.2343510 (Source: Neurological Research)
