Serostatus of Coxsackie B in a sample of women with miscarriage in Baghdad, Iraq
CONCLUSION: This investigation posits Coxsackie B virus (CBV) as a possible etiology for miscarriage in the Iraqi female population. Further studies employing larger cohorts and robust methodologies, beyond the current detection technique, are warranted to corroborate these observations and elucidate the potential mechanisms by which CBV might induce miscarriage.PMID:38669524 | DOI:10.3233/HAB-240005 (Source: Human Antibodies)

Thirteen-year surveillance results of acute flaccid paralysis cases in Southeast Turkey and the effect of refugee movements on surveillance results
CONCLUSION: Although refugee movements appear to may have adverse effects on AFP incidence and surveillance outcomes, larger studies involving the whole country, particularly at places where no refugees settled, are needed to achieve more conclusive evidence.PMID:38669157 | DOI:10.21101/cejph.a7605 (Source: Central European Journal of Public Health)

Viruses, Vol. 16, Pages 677: Caboxamycin Inhibits Heart Inflammation in a Coxsackievirus B3-Induced Myocarditis Mouse Model
ang-Jip Nam Coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) is a positive single-strand RNA genome virus which belongs to the enterovirus genus in the picornavirus family, like poliovirus. It is one of the most prevalent pathogens that cause myocarditis and pancreatitis in humans. However, a suitable therapeutic medication and vaccination have yet to be discovered. Caboxamycin, a benzoxazole antibiotic isolated from the culture broth of the marine strain Streptomyces sp., SC0774, showed an antiviral effect in CVB3-infected HeLa cells and a CVB3-induced myocarditis mouse model. Caboxamycin substantially decreased CVB3 VP1 production and cleav...

Enterovirus-Related Parainfectious Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis Presenting with Dorsal Midbrain Syndrome: A Pediatric Case Report
An 8-year-old male patient presented to the pediatric clinic with complaints of cough, cold, lethargy, fever, restricted eye movements, and altered sensorium for one day. A detailed clinical examination revealed bilateral ophthalmoparesis, with left occulomotor nerve involvement leading to limitations of vertical gaze. The patient was referred to the ophthalmology clinic for assessment. Upon evaluation, it was observed that the child exhibited upward gaze palsy and convergence-retraction nystagmus as can be seen in Figure 1. (Source: Pediatric Neurology)

Environmental Surveillance of Poliovirus and Non-polio Enteroviruses in Iran, 2017 –2023: First Report of Imported Wild Poliovirus Type 1 Since 2000
AbstractIn Iran, which is at high risk of the Wild Poliovirus (WPV) and Vaccine-Derived Poliovirus (VDPV) importation due to its neighborhood with two polio endemic countries, Pakistan and Afghanistan, Environmental Surveillance (ES) was established in November 2017. Sistan-Balouchestan province was chosen for the ES due to its vicinity with Pakistan and Afghanistan. Five sewage collection sites in 4 cities (Zahedan, Zabol, Chabahar and Konarak) were selected in the high-risk areas. Since the establishment of ES in November 2017 till the end of 2023, 364 sewage specimens were collected and analyzed. The ES detected poliovi...

Infectious etiology and indicators of malabsorption or intestinal injury in childhood diarrhea
CONCLUSIONS: Childhood diarrhea can lead to increasingly severe nutrient deficiencies. Steatorrhea is the hallmark of malabsorption, and a stool test, such as the acid steatocrit, can be routinely used as a laboratory tool for the semi-quantitative evaluation of fat malabsorption in diarrheic children.PMID:38648349 | DOI:10.7705/biomedica.6913 (Source: Biomedica : Revista del Instituto Nacional de Salud)
