Snakebite-Associated Infections: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
The objective of this systematic review was to determine the prevalence of snakebite infections and characterize the bacteria isolated from these infections. A systematic literature review in five databases was carried out to assess the prevalence of snakebite infection. A meta-analysis was performed using a random-effects model to calculate the pooled prevalence and 95% CIs. Cochran's Q test and the I2 statistic were used to assess between-study heterogeneity. The pooled prevalence of infection due to snakebite was 27.0% (95% CI: 22.0-32.0%), with high heterogeneity among studies (I2 = 99.7%). The prevalence was higher in...

Functionalization of Chlorotonils: Dehalogenil as Promising Lead Compound for In Vivo Application
Angew Chem Int Ed Engl. 2024 Mar 19:e202319765. doi: 10.1002/anie.202319765. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe natural product chlorotonil displays high potency against multidrug-resistant Gram-positive bacteria and Plasmodium falciparum. Yet, its scaffold is characterized by low solubility and oral bioavailability but progress was recently made to enhance these properties. Applying late-stage functionalization, we aimed to further optimize the molecule. Previously unknown reactions including a sulfur-mediated dehalogenation were revealed. Dehalogenil, the product of this reaction, was identified as the most promising comp...

Perioperative pancreaticoduodenectomy management strategy focusing on postoperative early drain colonization
ConclusionWe observed a strong correlation between POEDC and poor postoperative outcomes. The BMI, age, and PCT and drain amylase level on POD 1 should be considered POEDC risk factors, with the need to propose an antibiotic perioperative strategy. POEDC control may represent the key to improving postoperative outcomes after PD. (Source: Surgery Today)

Formation/characterization of humin-mediated anaerobic granular sludge and enhanced methanogenic performance
This study presents a novel method for accelerating the granulation of methanogenic anaerobic granular sludge (AnGS) in an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor using solid-phase humin (HM). The results demonstrated that HM-mediated AnGS (HM-AnGS) formed rapidly within 50 days. The increase in particle size, settling velocity and mechanical strength was attributed to the rapid granulation of the HM-AnGS. The maximum methane yield of the HM-AnGS was 5-fold higher than that of the control group. This is consistent with the findings, which showed that HM-AnGS had 3.2-3.4 times more methyl-coenzyme M reductase (Mcr) a...
