Toxicol Res (Camb). 2024 Mar 23;13(2):tfae047. doi: 10.1093/toxres/tfae047. eCollection 2024 Apr.ABSTRACTTrichinellosis is a parasite zoonosis that is spread through ingesting raw or undercooked meat that contains the Trichinella spiralis (T. spiralis) infective larvae. It has three clinical phases: intestinal, migratory, and muscular. Kuth root, also known as Costus (Saussurea lappa) roots, is used in many traditional medical systems all over the world to treat a variety of illnesses, such as dyspepsia, diarrhoea, vomiting, and inflammation. Current study assessed the therapeutic Potential of costus roots extract (CRE) tr...

Promoting Responsible Antibiotic Usage in Dental Implant Procedures
Antibiotic prophylaxis in the context of dental implant procedures has been a matter of controversy. The use of antibiotics as a preventive measure aims to minimize the risk of postoperative infections associated with implant placement. 1 While there is a consensus on the importance of preventing infections, the specific protocols for antibiotic prophylaxis have been a matter of debate. Antibiotics may lead to a variety of side effects, from diarrhoea to life-threatening allergic reactions. Moreover, the extensive use of antibiotics is associated with the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. (Source: Journal of Oral and ...

Matrine and icariin can inhibit bovine viral diarrhoea virus replication by promoting type I interferon response < em > in vitro < /em >
CONCLUSION: This study proves that both matrine and icariin have inhibitory effects on BVDV replication by activating IFN production and the IFN signalling pathway. The finding is promising and should open up the possibility of larger-scale in vitro research followed by in vivo experiments evaluating matrine and icariin as therapeutic agents in BVD cases.PMID:38525227 | PMC:PMC10960331 | DOI:10.2478/jvetres-2024-0013 (Source: Cell Research)

Return to flying duties of German military pilots after recovery from COVID-19
Conclusion Due to their demanding working environment, pilots, and other high-hazard employees, should undergo medical evaluation prior to return to their duties to exclude ongoing symptoms and the development of post-acute COVID-19 or post-COVID-19 syndrome. The scope of examinations may depend on the severity of the disease, comorbidities, the vaccination status, the predominant SARS-CoV-2 variant and the type of aircraft flown. National study on the risks of COVID-19 infection for paediatric kidney transplant recipients: a retrospective, cross-sectional study
Conclusion We report 10.4% of the UK paediatric renal transplantation population had documented COVID-19 infections with positive SARS-CoV-2 PCR RNA with 28% of those affected requiring hospitalisation. The increased incidence of AKI, particularly after the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, was possibly due to increased testing. There was low morbidity and mortality compared with the adult population. (Source: Archives of Disease in Childhood)

Fatal coinfection of blastocystosis and intestinal trichomoniasis in a rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta)
AbstractA 3-year-old male rhesus macaque was presented at Referral Veterinary Polyclinic-Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex, with a chief complaint of chronic diarrhoea and swelling of dependent body parts. The patient's history indicates that the monkey had been experiencing diarrhoea for the past month, with 2 –3 episodes of vomiting in the last 2 days. Additionally, oedema has developed within the last 2 weeks. The clinical examination findings revealed dullness and depression, the mucus membrane appeared pale, with a temperature-102.1 °F, a respiration rate-28/min, and a heart rate-92/min. The cap illary refill...

Insights into the epidemiology, pathogenesis, and differential diagnosis of schistosomiasis
Eur J Microbiol Immunol (Bp). 2024 Mar 18. doi: 10.1556/1886.2024.00013. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSchistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease that is prevalent in low- and middle-income countries. There are five human pathogenic species, of which Schistosoma haematobium, Schistosoma mansoni and Schistosoma japonicum are the most prevalent worldwide and cause the greatest burden of disease in terms of mortality and morbidity. In addition, hybrid schistosomes have been identified through molecular analysis. Human infection occurs when cercariae, the larval form of the parasite, penetrate the skin of people while bat...

Formulation, Characterization and In Vitro Evaluation of Mesalamine and Bifidobacterium bifidum Loaded Hydrogel Beads in Capsule System for Colon Targeted Delivery
AAPS PharmSciTech. 2024 Mar 14;25(3):61. doi: 10.1208/s12249-024-02764-3.ABSTRACTMesalamine is a first-line drug for the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases. However, its premature release associated with marketed formulations leads to adverse effects like gastric trouble, vomiting, and diarrhoea. To minimize these side effects, colon-targeted drug delivery is essential. Besides conventional pharmacotherapy, bifidogenic probiotics with anti-inflammatory activity has been reported to elicit a significant impact on the remission of ulcerative colitis. Bifidogenic probiotics being acid-labile necessitate developing a gas...

Norovirus GII.17 Caused Five Outbreaks Linked to Frozen Domestic Bilberries in Finland, 2019
AbstractIn March 2019, the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare and Finnish Food Authority started an outbreak investigation after a notification of food business operators ’ recall of frozen bilberries due to a norovirus finding. A retrospective search was conducted in the food and waterborne outbreak notification system to identify the notifications linked to norovirus and consumption of bilberries in January–March 2019. Five outbreaks were found in which norovir us GII or GII.17 had been detected in patient samples. A pooled retrospective cohort study was performed for those four in which a questionnaire study h...
