Deathcap mushrooms – Amanita phalloides
What makes the death cap fungus (toadstool or mushroom), Amanita phalloides, so poisonous? Well, the primary toxin present in this fungus is alpha-amanitin. This chemical goes by the following systematic name, although you’re unlikely to see it spelled out in full in the news about the ongoing murder trial that’s in the Australian news at the moment: 2-[(1R,4S,8R,10S,13S,16S,34S)-34-[(2S)-2-Butanyl]-13-[(2R,3R)-3,4-dihydroxy-2-butanyl]-8,22-dihydroxy-27-oxido-2,5,11,14,30,33,36,39-octaoxo-27-thia-3,6,12,15,25,29,32,35,38-nonaazapentacyclo[14.12.11 .06,10.018,26.019,24]nonatriaconta-18(26),19,21,23-tetraen-4-yl]...

Spray Coating Fights Viruses and Bacteria
Researchers at the University of Sydney in Australia engineered a new spray coating for surfaces that provides long-term protection against bacterial and viral contamination. The material is intended as a long-term alternative to disinfectant sprays and combines hydrophobic properties with antimicrobial nanoparticles to reduce microbial contamination. The hydrophobicity of the coating prevents liquid droplets from spreading over the surface, helping to prevent biofilm formation and microbial colonization. If the coating becomes damaged, reducing its hydrophobic properties, a second line of defense in the form of nanopa...

A scarce flower for Passover and Easter
We took a walk along the Devil’s Dyke hoping to see Green Hairstreaks and perhaps the Dotterals that had been sighted on neighbouring Ditch Farm. We had no luck with either of those, although there were lots of Brimstone butterflies, a few Whitethroats, and our first Willow Warbler of the year. Almost in passing we noticed a pretty purple flower with a yellow centre. Mrs Sciencebase suggested it might be some kind of anemone and it is indeed in the same sub-family, Ranunculoideae, but it is specifically Pulsatilla vulgaris, known colloquially as the European Pasque Flower. Pasque from the Hebrew word for Passover, Pa...

Future Treatment For Autoimmune Diseases
New digital health tech targeted to fight autoimmune diseases or their symptoms are diverse and creative. These often completely different illnesses, like type 1 diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis, indicate an immune system dysfunction. Immune cells and mechanisms target the body’s own cells and structures, deconstructing it bit by bit and inducing inflammation. An estimated 24-50 million people in the US alone are living with autoimmune conditions. It affects their day-to-day life, but scientists suggest people living with chronic conditions could also be more suscepti...

Fight Aging! Newsletter, August 3rd 2020
In this study, we examined the effects of oxytocin on the Aβ-induced impairment of synaptic plasticity in mice. To investigate the effect of oxytocin on synaptic plasticity, we prepared acute hippocampal slices for extracellular recording and assessed long-term potentiation (LTP) with perfusion of the Aβ active fragment (Aβ25-35) in the absence and presence of oxytocin. We found that oxytocin reversed the impairment of LTP induced by Aβ25-35 perfusion in the mouse hippocampus. These effects were blocked by pretreatment with the selective oxytocin receptor antagonist L-368,899. Furthermore, the treatment with the...

Organoids Used to Identify NRG1 as a Regulator of Tissue Repair in the Intestine
The intestinal lining is an important tissue. Among its other functions, it protects the body from inflammation that can be generated by the actions of gut microbes. This barrier declines with age, and this is thought to be influential in the increased chronic inflammation observed in older people. Ways to spur greater maintenance and repair on the part of cell populations making up intestinal tissue would likely be of great benefit, given the importance of chronic inflammation as a driver of age-related disease. A strong cellular lining is essential for a healthy gut as it provides a barrier to the billions of mi...

Commentators and Journalists Weigh In On Digital Health And Related Privacy, Safety And Security Matters. Lots Of Interesting Perspectives - June 2, 2020.
----- This weekly blog is to explore the news around the larger issues around Digital Health, data security, data privacy, AI / ML. technology, social media and related matters. Secrecy unconstrained! Note: Appearance here is not to suggest I see any credibility or value in what follows. I will leave it to the reader to decide what is worthwhile and what is not! The point is to let people know what is being said / published tha...
