Diagnostic dilemma: a patient with diarrhoea
Clinical presentation A Sudanese man in his early 40s was admitted to our tertiary healthcare centre with a 3-month history of abdominal pain, fevers and intermittent diarrhoea on the background of a known bladder lesion awaiting a transurethral resection. The patient denied any other constitutional symptoms and did not have any other significant medical history. On examination, the patient was febrile, but otherwise haemodynamically stable. There was bilateral cervical and left supraclavicular lymphadenopathy with generalised abdominal tenderness without any palpable masses. Admission laboratory investigations demonstrate...

Type 2 autoimmune pancreatitis associated with ulcerative colitis
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic idiopathic inflammatory disease mainly affecting the rectum and colon and causing diarrhoea and mucopurulent stools. UC can present with extraintestinal manifestations in various organs and systems and can be associated with various comorbidities. Autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) is a specific type of pancreatitis associated with autoimmune abnormalities and is divided into two clinical types: type 1 (lymphoplasmacytic sclerosing pancreatitis) and type 2 (idiopathic ductocentric pancreatitis). The current study shows an association between type 2 AIP and UC, which may be related to genetic...

Promoting wound recovery through stable intestinal flora: Reducing post-operative complications in colorectal cancer surgery patients
This study examined the relationship between intestinal flora stability and post-operative recovery in patients undergoing CRC surgery. Between May 2020 and 2023, 80 CRC patients from our hospital's Colorectal Surgery Department were enrolled. A random number table was used to divide them into two categories. Both groups were subjected to distinct gastrointestinal preparation protocols. Indicators of clinical therapeutic effect, intestinal flora balance following surgery, post-operative complications and quality of life were evaluated. The observation group, which adhered to a distinct gastrointestinal regimen, demonstrate...

HIV enteropathy (HIVE) and Slim disease (SD): historical and current perspectives
The emergence of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic in Africa was first reported among patients originating from Central Africa presenting with severe wasting symptoms resembling marasmus in 1983. The illness was associated commonly with chronic, and often life-threatening diarrhoea [1]. There was no evidence of an underlying immunosuppressive disease, no history of blood-product transfusion, homosexuality, or intravenous-drug abuse and the disease appeared to affect females as frequently as males.
