Use of Sick days/PTO/Conference days etc
Some programs have good number of sick days (upto 2 weeks) and also academic days/conference days (some program offer 5+ days for each of these per year). How are these treated during residency? I am hearing different opinions that range from considering sick days as de facto vacation days to only using them when you are extremely ill. I am applying to psych, if that matters at all. Can we use these days to travel to a different state (e.g. for academic days, if you were ostensibly doing... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Consumer Reviewer considered research?
Hello everyone, For a couple of years I have worked as a consumer reviewer for a program that funds clinical research. I review up to 15 research proposals and rank them according to impact, feasibility, personnel, etc. Several clinicians, researchers, statisticians, and I meet during a conference for two or three days and discuss our notes for each category of the application. We then vote to determine which are deemed most worthy of funding. I am preparing for applications this fall... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Thoughts on outpatient job
1099. I can set my own schedule, no requirements on number of patients to see. The group handles everything from office space to billing, good front desk support. Option to be fully tele or hybrid. Good collaboration between providers with regular case conference. About 12 docs and 3x that in phd level therapists. They target higher income patient population. For all of this they give 60% of collected billing. They only take a single insurer and have been with them for a long time. No... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Am I in the Wrong Field?
I’m an R1 who is really struggling in radiology. I had lower step 1 scores to begin with, and feel like I’m falling even further behind my coresidents. I try to study every day but am having difficulty concentrating and retaining information. I get very anxious when asked questions by attendings and on case conferences and almost always give the wrong answers even though everyone else seems to get everything right. I’m so tired of struggling through studying only to not see any fruits of my... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Can presenting my abstract at this conference have any positive impact on my application? (Gap Year Student)
I am currently in my 2nd gap year and a professor I still keep in touch with recommended that I apply to present an abstract paper at a conference sponsored by a branch of the National Association for African American Studies (NAAAS) dedicated to Hispanic studies. After getting it accepted I realized it’s very expensive ($225) and a long drive from where I live. It seems to be one of the conferences that basically accepts any abstract. I have other presentations/publications from undergrad... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Chances for ortho?
I attend a top 30 program. My main concern is a P grade in IM. I've honored 4 other rotations (that include surgery), and HP 2 other. Have not yet taken Step 2. Research is strong, with at least 5 pubs and several abstracts at national conferences. What are my realistic chances? I feel like my app would be overall strong except for the P grade. How much should I be worried about this? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Retaking a 516
Hi I wanted to apply to T10s and so I wanted to retake the MCAT to get 520+. I was wondering if, even if I do manage to get this score, it would still reflect poorly on me for retaking a 516? I know most people are going to say I should work on other parts of my app, but I feel like the rest of my app is pretty decent and my MCAT is really what is holding me back (I have a 3.95, 5th author in JAMA and a first-author paper im finishing up + 2 conference presentations, 300 clin/500 nonclin... Applying to research powerhouses with non-science research?
Hey so as mentioned above I have a about a thousand hours research with one first author conference presentation at the most prestigious conference in my old field (American Political Science Association), and one sole author presentation at a small ethics conference, but no pubs. If the rest of my app lines up stats and ECs wise, is research in the social sciences and humanities sufficient to merit applying for some of the big research powerhouse T10s? Switching from Ortho to FM during m3
Hey everyone. I have always loved sports medicine and spent the last 2.5 years gunning for ortho. I just finish my m3 ortho elective and realized I enjoyed being more in MSK/sports clinic than the actual surgeries. I don’t want to work every weekend and be on call24/7. I have always known FM to sports medicine is a great route and I realized I liked outpatient too much. My questions are : 1) I have many poster presentations and 2 podiums at ortho conferences, I have 4 publications in... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
