Can a great research LOR make up for lack of pubs?
I've been leading my own virtual research project since Summer 2020 with minimal input from my PI, and have put in about 1100 hours so far. I don't have any pubs (yet) but I am working on a review paper with my PI and a couple of grad students for submission in July/August. I've also given 2 presentations at conferences (1 for a different project.) However, my PI and I discussed my LOR today, and she told me she's going to write me a glowing letter that details my transformation as a... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Chances of abstract being selected at a major conference
Hi all, I am new to research conferences and submitted an abstract for a major conference to be held later this year (AAPediatrics). I wanted to ask what is the acceptance rate of abstracts overall? Or are all abstracts accepted? Any insight would be great! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Rectifying two failed attempts on step 3.
Hello my fellow NICU peeps, As the title suggest, non-US IMG doing Peds residency in a small university program . Did not have any red flags on the CV up until the tragedy of step 3. Have 220 on step 1 and 215 on step 2- no attempts on any exam ever in my life before. Did research in med school, volunteer work, attended conferences etc to build up my cv and overall it looked well rounded . Given the evaluations of my residency, I would put myself in the average to above average resident in... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

July 16th MCAT- Complete around August 16th?
Hello Everyone, It will be my first time applying this cycle and in summary I graduated from UCLA in 2019 with a 3.83 Cgpa/ 3.77 BCPM GPA. During this time I worked hard on my application in regards to clinical experience (2000 hours), community service (1000 hours) and research (have 2 first author publications and an regional conference oral presentation and a poster). The MCAT is the last piece of the puzzle left and I just started studying now, in hopes of taking it on July 16th (3.2... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Religious activities during professional conferences: Where is/should be the line?
Hi all, Legitimately curious to hear everyone's thoughts on this. I've been to a couple of (secular) professional conferences where CEU-granting activities included presenters actively leading attendees in Hindu Chakra meditation as a self-care practice, which seems like a distinctly religious practice, moreso than "secular" mindfulness (though I think there's also an interesting discussion to be had about the secular appropriation of mindfulness and the pros/cons thereof). I'm curious of... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Only 1 elective in PM & R. Am I in trouble?
Due to personal circumstances along with my other M4 requirements, I may only be able to do 1 PM&R elective prior to applying for residency. I have had exposure to the field through research and a couple of conferences. I am planning on doing 1-2 more electives after submitting my application. In case it matters, my stats are decent for PM&R, I think (step 1 246), and I've honored 5/6 of my core rotations. My question is, will I be at great disadvantage if I apply with only 1 elective in pm&r? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Networking vs. Adventure - Conference Debate
So I am looking for advice and to suggestions. I am a medical student and have been invited to a national conference to present an oral presentation. The conference is hosted by a subspecialty of a competitive residency specialty. There is an afternoon that is open on the program with no scheduled lectures/talks/discussions/presentations/etc. I have never been to a national conference before this one, so I do not know what really to expect. There is an opportunity (outside of the... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Professor getting cold feet about letter of rec...
What do I do if a professor I am close to and made a letter of rec for me is suddenly getting cold feet? I have had a really great relationship with this professor, did research with him, presented at conferences, but I wasn't able to publish my work by the time I graduated. I was even offered to be a mentor for his classes twice (including an upper level one)! It didn't happen because my schedule never lined up. I thought I had a really good relationship with this prof, and he wrote me a... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

single breath induction technique
Just got back from an anesthesia conference where a couple people made mention of the vital capacity single-breath induction technique. Just wondering if anyone out there has experience using it and prefers to use it in their practice? Any tips/tricks with it? I've actually tried it a couple times on adults that were otherwise healthy, coupled with an IV induction. I feel like I get intubating conditions much more rapidly than just an IV induction alone. The thing I think to consider would... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
