Dealing with the Elephant in the Waiting Room – Clipboards and Paper Forms
I recently had a visit to the doctor’s office for a routine procedure.  I kid you not that I was asked to complete essentially the same forms 3 different times.  Two times electronically and once on paper.  The staff assured me that the forms were asking different questions.  I frustratingly assured them that 95% of the questions were the same.  It was an awful experience for me as a patient and no doubt for them to have to review 3 different sets of forms.  While not every office is this disorganized, the patient experience when it comes to clipboards and patient forms has a lot to be desired at many healthcar...

Connecting Healthcare Clouds and Simplifying Solutions in a Secure Way
Healthcare cloud solutions have become much more sophisticated, reliable, and easier to connect. Gone are the days of a single cloud instance that can support all your needs.  However, managing the various cloud options can be challenging if you don’t have a thoughtful approach to it and work with great partners. At the HIMSS 2024 conference, we moderated a panel hosted by Rackspace Technology and Dell Technologies with healthcare multicloud experts and former CIOs who shared the benefits and challenges of implementing and integrating multicloud solutions in healthcare. Plus, they discussed how these models can evol...

Advancing Healthcare with High Performance Computing (HPC) and Cybersecurity
Healthcare has become a data-driven industry as the volume of data continues to grow and organizations are able to use that data to provide more personalized care. However, data alone won’t advance healthcare. New systems and processing power that can turn data into insights is the key to accelerating discoveries and improving care. At the HIMSS 2024 conference, we brought together an incredible panel hosted by AMD and Dell Technologies to discuss the ways high performance computing (HPC) is key to helping healthcare organizations solve the big challenges healthcare faces. Plus, we looked at how security has to be ba...

Nabla Ambient Clinical Voice Demo at HIMSS
It’s no secret that ambient clinical voice is one of our favorite topics here at Healthcare IT Today.  We clearly believe that it’s going to be one of the most impactful technologies to be implemented in healthcare.  As a doctor friend recently told me, “It’s the most useful single piece of IT technology I’ve seen in a long time from the doctor’s perspective.” That’s why at the HIMSS annual conference, I was excited to check out a demo of the Nabla ambient clinical voice solution which we captured on the video below for all to see their technology in action. Dr. Ed Lee, Chi...

Ensuring Precision in Patient Identity: Modern Approaches to Master Data Management
The government and many healthcare leaders are pushing for more interoperability and data sharing in healthcare.  While this is great and has the potential to make a really big impact for good on the lives of patients and potentially costs, one thing that is often missed in this discussion is high quality patient identification.  This is a problem that’s made worse by not having a national patient identifier, but let’s set that topic aside for a moment and recognize that even with a national patient identifier, patient identification and patient matching is still going to be a massive challenge. The depth of ...

Breaking News: Judy Faulkner from Epic Sneezed
We just got a special report coming out of Verona, WI that Judy Faulkner sneezed.  Our source which wanted to remain confidential for fear of retribution said that they were walking down the hall of Emerald City office and as they passed a conference room, they heard someone sneeze.  Once they heard the startling noise, they looked up and saw Judy Faulkner with her hand to her mouth. Those at Epic said that Judy’s sneeze was spreading like wildfire on the internal Epic Teams channel.  Employees weren’t sure what the sneeze meant and they were trying to help each other process such a reaction from the visiona...

The Long and Tortured History of Alpha-Synuclein and Parkinson ’s Disease
This study tracks the decades-long journey to harness alpha-synuclein as a treatment for Parkinson’s disease. Steven Zecola an activist who tracks Parkinson’s research and was on THCB last month discussing it, offers three key changes needed to overcome the underlying challenges. A Quick Start for Alpha-Synuclein R&D In the mid-1990’s, Parkinson’s patient advocacy groups had become impatient by the absence of any major therapeutic advances in the 25 years since L-dopa had been approved for Parkinson’s disease (PD). The Director of National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) se...

VBA Provides A Suite of Tools for Payers and TPAs Including a New Generative AI Product
VBA offers numerous portals to payers and their clients (which include doctors, patients, brokers, and more)—”one-stop shopping” for a large range of services. To ease the user experience with these services, the company has started using generative AI for training on their platform through a tool called VBA Assist. At the HCAA conference, President and CEO Mike Clayton cites their mission to “make the health care experience better for everyone” and explains some of their services: 24/7 self-service for patients, real-time chat, notifications for picking up meds or scheduling visits, risk modeling...

The Latest AI Craze: Ambient Scribing
By MATTHEW HOLT Okay, I can’t do it any longer. As much as I tried to resist, it is time to write about ambient scribing. But I’m going to do it in a slightly odd way If you have met me, you know that I have a strange English-American accent, and I speak in a garbled manner. Yet I’m using the inbuilt voice recognition that Google supplies to write this story now. Side note: I dictated this whole thing on my phone while watching my kids water polo game, which has a fair amount of background noise. And I think you’ll be modestly amused about how terrible the original transcript was. But then...

How to face our mistakes: Using the military ’s after-action review to improve morbidity and mortality conferences
Nearly three decades ago, David Hilfiker, a family medicine physician in rural Minnesota, authored an essay in the New England Journal of Medicine titled “Facing our mistakes.” In the piece, he chronicles three major medical mistakes he made during his long career practicing medicine. Some of the mistakes are horrifying and others simply tragic, but Read more… How to face our mistakes: Using the military’s after-action review to improve morbidity and mortality conferences originally appeared in KevinMD.com. Price Transparency: Shifting Responsibility to Employers
In this intriguing video, important advances in transparency of health care prices are explained by Mark Galvin, Founder, President and CEO at TALON at the HCAA conference in Las Vegas. Two “watershed moments” have been overlooked by most people, while media coverage focuses on other things such as the No Surprises Act. The first change came when a recent “transparency in coverage” law leverages fines on sponsors (normally employers), who the government hopes will then put pressure on health care providers to be more transparent. The second came with a class action lawsuit against Johnson & John...
