Comparing Outcomes in Patients Undergoing Colectomy at Veteran Affairs Hospitals and Non-Veteran Affairs Hospitals: A  Multiinstitutional Study
The Veteran Affairs Surgical Quality Improvement Program (VASQIP) and National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) are large databases designed to measure surgical outcomes for their respective populations. We sought to compare surgical outcomes in patients undergoing colectomies at Veterans Affairs (VA) hospitals versus non-VA hospitals. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

Prevalence and risk factors for early medical and surgical complications following an admission for acute severe ulcerative colitis
CONCLUSION: Early complications following an ASUC admission is prevalent although the majority are not serious. Risk factors associated with complications include low serum albumin, older age and a higher comorbidity score. Induction infliximab dose intensity, however, is not a risk factor.PMID:38059014 | PMC:PMC10697038 | DOI:10.1177/17562848231215148 (Source: Adv Data)

Liver Venous Deprivation for Rapid Liver Hypertrophy Before Major Hepatectomy: A Case Report
This report discusses LVD's utilization and technical challenges in managing a 49-year-old male with recurrent multifocal colorectal liver metastases (CRLM). The patient initially underwent neoadjuvant FOLFOX chemotherapy followed by a simultaneous laparoscopic sigmoid colectomy and liver surgery (microwave ablation of segment V and wedge resections of segment one and IVb), followed by completion of chemotherapy. The patient had an R0 resection with clear colon and liver surgical margins. Nine months after the initial surgery, the patient had a rise in tumor markers, and surveillance imaging demonstrated recurrence of live...

Novel Preoperative Risk Stratification Using Digital Phenotyping Applying a Scalable Machine-Learning Approach
CONCLUSIONS: For 3 frequently performed surgeries, we identified 3 digital phenotypes. The typical profiles of each phenotype were described and could be used to anticipate adverse postoperative events.PMID:38051671 | DOI:10.1213/ANE.0000000000006753 (Source: Anesthesia and Analgesia)

Recurrent sclerosing cholangitis post-transplant: increased recurrence rates following re-transplantation
Discussion/conclusionRecurrent PSC following liver transplantation is common, particularly in younger patients. It occurs earlier and is more frequent following a second transplant. (Source: Irish Journal of Medical Science)

Impact of drinking chinese green tea on postoperative short outcomes for gastric cancer: A randomized controlled trial
Rationale: Early intake after surgery can decrease postoperative ileus. Several studies show coffee can stimulate bowel activity and be safe in patients after elective colectomy, mainly due to caffeine. It was postulated that drinking Chinese green tea as rich caffeine beverage after subtotal distal gastrectomy accelerates postoperative recovery in patients. (Source: Clinical Nutrition ESPEN)

Association of time to resection with survival in patients with colon cancer
ConclusionsPatients with CC who underwent resection  ≥ 25 days following diagnosis demonstrated similar 1-year, but inferior 5- and 10-year survival, compared to those who underwent surgery within 25 days. Socioeconomic factors, including race and Medicaid insurance, were linked with greater odds of delayed resection. Efforts to balance appro priate preoperative evaluation with expedited resection are needed to optimize patient outcomes. (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)
