Progression of duodenal neoplasia to advanced adenoma in patients with familial adenomatous polyposis
ConclusionsNADAs in patients with FAP frequently become exacerbated. Our findings suggest that patients with FAP who develop duodenal adenomas should be surveyed to prevent the development of duodenal cancer. (Source: Hereditary Cancer in Clinical Practice)

Association of hemicolectomy with survival in stage II colorectal cancer: a retrospective cohort study
AbstractTo compare the oncological survival outcomes of partial colectomy (PC) and hemicolectomy (HC) in patients with stage II colon cancer. A total of 18,795 patients with stage II colon cancer who underwent hemicolectomy (n  = 12,022) or partial colectomy (n = 6773) from 2010 to 2019 were included in the the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) were compared between the two groups, and the threshold of harvested lymph nodes was det ermined. The results showed that age, gender, race, tumor site, scope of regional lymph nodes, postope...

Intestinal ultrasound in inflammatory bowel disease: New kid on the block
AbstractIntestinal ultrasound is an emerging technique for diagnosing and monitoring patients with inflammatory bowel disease  (IBD). It is a simple, non-invasive, inexpensive, safe and reliable tool for monitoring patients with IBD. This technique has good diagnostic accuracy in the assessment of the extent and severity of IBD and its complications. The most commonly used parameters are bowel wall thickness, color Dopple r flow, bowel wall stratification and peri-bowel inflammation. Various scoring systems have been developed utilizing the above parameters to monitor patients with IBD. It is a good tool to monitor respon...

BRAF V600E-mutated Colorectal Neuroendocrine Carcinoma Effectively Treated with a Chemotherapy Protocol for BRAF-mutated Metastatic Colorectal Cancer: A Case Report
Intern Med. 2023 Nov 20. doi: 10.2169/internalmedicine.2870-23. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMetastatic colorectal neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) is often treated using a chemotherapy protocol for small-cell lung cancer; however, the prognosis is extremely poor. A 55-year-old woman with BRAF V600E-mutated transverse colon NEC and liver metastases underwent colectomy followed by FOLFOXIRI plus bevacizumab. Consequently, the liver metastases markedly shrank. Owing to later worsening of the liver metastases, she received encorafenib and binimetinib plus cetuximab. Despite discontinuing binimetinib due to myalgia, she had a l...

Use of a 5-Item Modified Frailty Index for Assessing Outcomes After Hartmann's Reversal: An ACS-NSQIP Study
DISCUSSION: An mFI-5 of ≥2 was associated with greater morbidity, mortality, and eLOS following Hartmann's reversal. However, there were no mortality or eLOS differences in patients with an mFI-5 of 1 and only a 14% increase in any morbidity, making these patients potentially good candidates for Hartmann's reversal. Furthermore, laparoscopic surgery was associated with a protective effect for overall morbidity and eLOS, potentially mitigating some of the risk associated with higher frailty scores.PMID:37978813 | DOI:10.1177/00031348231216483 (Source: The American Surgeon)

Role of colectomy in the management of appendiceal tumors: a retrospective cohort study
Appendiceal tumors represent a range of histologies that vary in behavior. Recommendations for treatment with appendectomy versus right hemicolectomy (RHC) for different tumor types are evolving and sometimes ... (Source: BMC Gastroenterology)
