Timing of readmissions for complications following emergency colectomy: follow-up beyond post-operative day 30 matters
This study aimed to assess the readmission rate and factors associated with readmission 6-months following emergency colectomy.MethodsA retrospective cohort study of adult patients who underwent emergency colectomy (2010 –2018) was performed using the Nationwide Readmissions Database. The cohort was divided into two groups: (i) no readmission and (ii) emergency readmission(s) for complications related to colectomy (defined using ICD-9/10 codes). Readmissions were categorized as either “early” (POD0–30) or “ late” (>  POD30). Differences between groups were described and multivariable regression controlling...

Surgical and medical outcomes in robotic compared to laparoscopic colectomy global prospective cohort from the American college of surgeons national surgical quality improvement program
ConclusionsIn this prospective cohort from the NSQIP, robotic colectomy was associated with a significant reduction in postoperative ileus, unplanned conversion to open surgery, morbidity, and overall mortality when compared to laparoscopic colectomy. (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

Prognostic nomogram in patients with right-sided colon cancer after colectomy: a surveillance, epidemiology, and end results –based study
ConclusionWe developed and validated a survival prediction model for patients with RCC. This novel nomogram outperforms the traditional TNM staging system and can guide clinical practitioners in making optimal clinical decisions. (Source: Frontiers in Oncology)

To Resect or Not to Resect: A Nationwide Comparison of Management of Sigmoid Volvulus
Despite the high recurrence rate of sigmoid volvulus, there is reluctance to perform a prophylactic colectomy in frail patients due to the operation's perceived risks. We used a nationally representative database to compare risk of recurrence in patients undergoing a prophylactic colectomy versus endoscopic detorsion alone. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

Transverse colon volvulus - a case report and literature review
S Afr J Surg. 2023 Nov;61(4):53-55.ABSTRACTTransverse colon volvulus is a rare diagnosis, with less than 100 cases reported up to 2019. The condition is complicated by the absence of characteristic radiological findings and is typically diagnosed intraoperatively. It is a surgical emergency as the condition can lead to bowel necrosis and is associated with a mortality rate of up to 33%. Bowel resection is the treatment of choice, and if a megacolon is present a subtotal colectomy is recommended. Due to the rarity of transverse colon volvulus, limited data is available on the long-term outcome of patients.PMID:38450699 (Sou...
