Focal Cancer in Colitis
Clin Colon Rectal Surg. 2023 Mar 15;37(1):22-29. doi: 10.1055/s-0043-1762560. eCollection 2024 Jan.ABSTRACTColorectal cancer (CRC) is a known complication of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Widely accepted guidelines recommend that patients with ulcerative colitis diagnosed with CRC undergo total proctocolectomy with or without ileal pouch-anal anastomosis, and that patients with Crohn's disease and CRC undergo either total colectomy or proctocolectomy. These approaches are ideal for preventing synchronous and metachronous cancer, minimizing risk of refractory colitis requiring reoperation, and is the appropriate treatme...

Bariatric surgery is as safe as other common operations: an analysis of the ACS-NSQIP
CONCLUSIONS: MBS demonstrates a remarkably promising safety profile and compares favorably to other common procedures in the short-term. PCPs and surgeons from other specialties can confidently refer patients for these low-risk, lifesaving operations.PMID:38182525 | DOI:10.1016/j.soard.2023.11.017 (Source: Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases : official journal of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery)

Which is the appropriate surgical procedure for appendiceal adenocarcinoma: appendectomy, partial colectomy or right hemicolectomy?
ConclusionsRight hemicolectomy may not always be necessary for appendiceal adenocarcinoma patients. An appendectomy could be sufficient for therapeutic effect of stage I patients, but limited for stage II patients. Right hemicolectomy was not superior to partial colectomy for advanced stage patients, suggesting omission of standard hemicolectomy might be feasible. However, adequate lymphadenectomy should be strongly recommended. (Source: Clinical and Translational Oncology)

Comment on: Bariatric surgery is as Safe as Other Common Operations: An Analysis of the ACS-NSQIP
We read with much interest the manuscript titled "Bariatric Surgery is as Safe as Other Common Operations: An Analysis of the ACS-NSQIP"[1]. This robust study, encompassing 1.6 million patients, meticulously compares outcomes including readmission, length of stay, complications, and mortality among patients undergoing metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) – specifically laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (SG) and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) – with those undergoing common operations like hip arthroplasty, and laparoscopic procedures such as cholecystectomy, appendectomy, colectomy, hysterectomy, and hernia repairs. (So...

Tofacitinib real-world experience in ulcerative colitis in Finland (FinTofUC): a retrospective non-interventional multicenter patient chart data study
CONCLUSIONS: In this real-world cohort, including a majority of bio-experienced UC patients, tofacitinib was effective in achieving steroid-free clinical remission in a third of the population at one year. A majority of patients in remission at week 16 were also in remission at one year. Results are in line with earlier published real-world studies. Association between dementia risk and ulcerative colitis, with and without colectomy: a Swedish population-based register study
Conclusion The findings are consistent with previous evidence suggesting a slightly increased dementia risk among individuals with UC. This study provided no evidence of further risk increase of dementia among those who had a colectomy. (Source: BMJ Open)
