A novel U-tied semi-manual anastomosis in totally laparoscopic colectomy
CONCLUSIONS: The U-tied semi-manual anastomosis is a straightforward and effective method for intracorporeal anastomosis. The simplified reconstruction technique of U-tied series, together with the minimization of technique variability, results in consistent outcomes when performed by surgeons with different levels of experience. The streamlined process enhances the homogeneity of the intracorporeal anastomosis while reducing cartridge use.PMID:38444145 | DOI:10.1016/j.asjsur.2023.10.050 (Source: Asian Journal of Surgery)

Cytomegalovirus Colitis in a Patient with Severe Treatment Refractory Ulcerative Colitis
CONCLUSIONS: Despite our patient having multiple risk factors for developing CMV colitis, upadacitinib may have played a role when considering its known impact on the herpes family of viruses. CMV colitis should be evaluated for in any patient who presents with worsening symptoms without evidence of other infection or response to increase in therapy.PMID:38444641 | PMC:PMC10914341 | DOI:10.1093/crocol/otae014 (Source: Herpes)

Colorectal procedures with the novel Hugo ™ RAS system: training process and case series report from a non-robotic surgical team
ConclusionsCommon colorectal procedures can be safely performed using the Hugo ™ RAS platform. Prior experience in robotic surgery is not a necessary requirement, but following a structured training program is essential.Graphical Abstract (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

Robotic Technology in Emergency General Surgery Cases
This cohort study examines the trends over time in the use of robotic surgery for emergent or urgent cholecystectomy, colectomy, inguinal hernia repair, or ventral hernia repair. (Source: JAMA Surgery)

Robotics for Emergency General Surgery
This study was motivated by limited data on how minimally invasive approaches are being applied in urgent and emergent surgical care. As is true in elective surgery, the authors observed significant growth in the proportional use of robotic-assisted surgery for each procedure (cholecystectomy, colectomy, and inguinal and ventral hernia repair). In a propensity score –matched analysis, accounting for measurable differences between patients undergoing laparoscopic vs robotic-assisted surgery, they also found that the robotic-assisted approach was associated with lower rates of conversions to open surgery and shorter length...

Efficacy of optimised thiopurine therapy in patients with moderate-to-severe ulcerative colitis: retrospective long-term follow-up from two randomised trials
CONCLUSION: Optimised thiopurine therapy demonstrated effective long-term treatment for patients with ulcerative colitis.PMID:38444060 | DOI:10.1080/00365521.2024.2323502 (Source: Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology)

Digital spatial profiling identifies molecular changes involved in development of colitis-associated colorectal cancer
ConclusionBoth tissue types and patient groups are molecularly distinguishable on the basis of their gene expression patterns. Further prospective work is necessary to confirm these differences and establish their clinical significance and potential utility as biomarkers. (Source: Frontiers in Oncology)

Dynamic prediction of advanced colorectal neoplasia in inflammatory bowel disease
CONCLUSION: The new prediction model showed good discrimination and calibration, however, generalizability results varied. Future research should focus on formal external validation and relate predicted aCRN risks to surveillance intervals prior to clinical application.PMID:38431223 | DOI:10.1016/j.cgh.2024.02.014 (Source: Clinical Colorectal Cancer)

Value of glucose transport protein 1 expression in detecting lymph node metastasis in patients with colorectal cancer
CONCLUSION: GLUT-1 expression was significantly correlated with the SUVmax of 18F-FDG-PET/CT for primary tumors and lymph nodes. Clinicians should consider GLUT-1 expression in preoperative endoscopic biopsy in interpreting PET/CT findings.PMID:38414613 | PMC:PMC10895641 | DOI:10.12998/wjcc.v12.i5.931 (Source: Clinical Colorectal Cancer)

Ureter Metastasis From Colorectal Cancer Revealed on 18F-FDG PET/CT
Clin Nucl Med. 2024 Feb 27. doi: 10.1097/RLU.0000000000005127. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe involvement of the ureter as a site of metastasis of colorectal cancer is quite rare. Here we present FDG PET/CT findings of the right ureter metastasis from colon cancer in a patient after colectomy 6 years ago. 18F-FDG PET/CT showed increased 18F-FDG uptake in the right ureter with SUVmax of 4.3. The pathology and immunohistochemistry confirmed the diagnosis of ureter metastasis from colon cancer.PMID:38409759 | DOI:10.1097/RLU.0000000000005127 (Source: Clinical Colorectal Cancer)

Disparities in Access, Quality, and Clinical Outcome for Latino Californians with Colon Cancer
CONCLUSIONS: Latino colon cancer patients experienced delays, segregation, and lower receipt of recommended care. Hospital-level colectomy volume appears to be strongly associated with access, quality, and survival--especially for patients who identify as Latino--suggesting that directing at-risk cancer patients to high-volume hospitals may improve health equity.PMID:38407273 | DOI:10.1097/SLA.0000000000006251 (Source: Cancer Control)
