Despite the high recurrence rate of sigmoid volvulus, there is reluctance to perform a prophylactic colectomy in frail patients due to the operation's perceived risks. We used a nationally representative database to compare risk of recurrence in patients undergoing a prophylactic colectomy versus endoscopic detorsion alone.
