Alcohol - a scoping review for Nordic Nutrition Recommendations 2023
The objective of this scoping review is to evaluate the updated evidence on the consumption of alcohol and health outcomes regarded as relevant for the Nordic and Baltic countries, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, and all-cause mortality. It is based on the previous Nordic Nutrition Recommendations of 2012 and relevant papers published until 31 May 2021. Current evidence from mainly observational epidemiological studies suggests that regular, moderate alcohol consumption may confer protective effects against myocardial infarction (MI) and type 2 diabetes. Mendelian randomization analyses do not fully support these...

‘There is still a part of me that would love to be the old me again’, how do adolescents and young adults (AYA) experience cancer-related bodily changes: a phenomenological interview study
ConclusionThis study offers in-depth insight into the bodily experiences of AYAs after cancer and how they respond to these changes from a phenomenological point of view.Implications for Cancer SurvivorsThis knowledge could be beneficial to provide more guidance for AYAs during and after their illness, by focussing on personalised psychological (after)care. Fertility preservation in hematological cancer patients
AbstractAmong adolescents and young adults, hematological malignancies are the most common malignancies. Although the survival rate of hematological malignancies in young patients has been dramatically improved, due to the continuous improvement and development of tumor diagnosis and treatment options, cytotoxic therapies can significantly reduce a patient ’s reproductive capacity and cause irreversible infertility. The most two established solutions are embryo cryopreservation and oocyte cryopreservation which can be considered in single female. Sperm or testicular tissue cryopreservation in adult male are feasible appr...

Messenger RNA technology shows first promise against a rare and deadly disease
The innovative technology behind some of the most successful COVID-19 vaccines is showing signs of success in treating a rare but dangerous metabolic disease. Researchers report today in Nature that regular infusions of messenger RNA (mRNA) coding for a missing enzyme may have slashed the rate of life-threatening medical emergencies in a handful of people with propionic acidemia, a condition in which toxic compounds build up in the body and damage organs. The results from Moderna are the first published clinical data showing that mRNA, used in vaccines to deliver viral proteins that provoke an immune respon...

Radiation doses received by major organs at risk in children and young adolescents treated for cancer with external beam radiation therapy: a large-scale study from 12 European countries.
Childhood cancer survivors are at high risk of long-term iatrogenic events, in particular those treated with radiotherapy. The prediction of risk of such events is mainly based on the knowledge of the radiation dose received to healthy organs and tissues during treatment of childhood cancer diagnosed decades ago. Longitudinal associations of screen time, physical activity, and sleep duration with body mass index in U.S. youth
CONCLUSIONS: One-year longitudinal associations between screen time and BMI may depend on form of screen time, what behavior it replaces (physical activity or sleep), and participant sex. The alternative statistical approaches yielded somewhat different results. Experimental manipulation of screen time and investigation of biopsychosocial mechanisms underlying the observed sex differences will allow for causal inference and can inform interventions.PMID:38566134 | DOI:10.1186/s12966-024-01587-6 (Source: Cancer Control)

Parenting Practices Are Associated With Out-of-School Physical Activity in US Adolescents in 2014
CONCLUSION: Future interventions should prioritize (1) shared decision making for older teens, (2) access to PA opportunities for younger adolescents, and (3) promoting peer PA and friend support for everyone.PMID:38561000 | DOI:10.1123/jpah.2023-0314 (Source: Journal of Physical Activity and Health)

[PERSPECTIVES] Pediatric Cancer Drug Development: Leveraging Insights in Cancer Biology and the Evolving Regulatory Landscape to Address Challenges and Guide Further Progress
The discovery and development of anticancer drugs for pediatric patients have historically languished when compared to both past and recent activity in drug development for adult patients, notably the dramatic spike of targeted and immune-oncology therapies. The reasons for this difference are multifactorial. Recent changes in the regulatory landscape surrounding pediatric cancer drug development and the understanding that some pediatric cancers are driven by genetic perturbations that also drive disparate adult cancers afford new opportunities. The unique cancer-initiating events and dependencies of many pediatric cancers...

Risk prediction model for gastric cancer within 5 years in healthy Korean adults
ConclusionOur prediction model, including young adults, showed good discrimination and calibration. Furthermore, this model considered a fixed time interval of 5  years to predict the risk of developing gastric cancer, considering endoscopic results. Thus, it could be clinically useful, especially for adults with endoscopic results. (Source: Gastric Cancer)

14. The Effect of Race on Pediatric Ovarian Mass Surgical Management
While ovarian masses are common in the pediatric population, malignancy is not. Accordingly, ovarian sparing surgery is the recommended treatment modality for benign ovarian masses in this population. Current literature demonstrates that rates of ovarian sparing surgery differ greatly between hospital systems and surgical sub-specialties. In the adult literature, disparities in rates of fertility sparing surgery exist with women of lower socioeconomic status more likely to undergo hysterectomy for low grade gynecologic cancers compared to their higher socioeconomic status counterparts. 5. Human Papillomavirus Vaccination Uptake in Adolescent Survivors of Bone Marrow Transplant
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States and can lead to cervical, oropharyngeal, and anogenital dysplasia and malignancy. Vaccination against HPV is recommended for all adolescents but is particularly important in patients with a history of bone marrow transplant (BMT) as they can have higher rates of persistent HPV-related disease or secondary cancers. Because of lost or reduced immunity after BMT, patients who previously received the vaccine must be re-vaccinated after transplant. (Source: Journal of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology)

3. Does mesna (mercapto-ethanesulphonate sodium) protect ovarian reserve after cyclophosphamide exposure?
Chemotherapy-induced ovarian failure is one of the severe challenges that female cancer survivors face in the reproductive age. Oocyte and ovarian tissue cryopreservation are fertility preservation methods with growing evidence yet remain an expensive option for many. Alternative fertility-preserving agents should be tailored according to the underlying mechanism of cytotoxic treatment the survivor is exposed to. Cyclophosphamide is one of the most common cytotoxic agents, with a wide spectrum of indications from childhood cancers to autoimmune diseases.
