The power of art and the powers of adolescents with cancer: Age-specific projects at Italian pediatric oncology centers
This article describes the oncology programs developed in Italy for adolescents and young adults with cancer, with a specific focus on the local projects created in pediatric oncology centers. A common feature of such projects is the emphasis on creative and artistic activities and laboratories (involving music, photography, novel writing, fashion design, and so on) designed to give young patients innovative means of expression. This article highlights the amazing powers of adolescents involved in these projects: the power to produce beautiful things in a place that is not normally associated with the idea of beauty; the po...

Understanding Breast Cancer Surgery Through Tiktok: an Analysis of Video Content and Viewer Engagement
CONCLUSIONS: Our study reveals that information on breast cancer surgery is widely shared on TikTok and has high viewer engagement. Factors influencing impact include video length, creator background, and search terms. While social media has democratized information sharing, there is a relative lack of physician creators providing objective and educational content. We highlight opportunities for health professionals to engage in social media as a tool for health education and ensure diverse and reliable healthcare content on these platforms.PMID:38592623 | DOI:10.1245/s10434-024-15268-y (Source: Ann Oncol)

Clinical analysis of 1301 children with hand and foot fractures and growth plate injuries
CONCLUSIONS: In contrast to previous epidemiological studies on pediatric hand and foot fractures, we mapped the locations of these fractures, including proximal, shaft, distal, and epiphyseal plate injuries. We analyzed the changing trends in fracture sites and injury etiologies with age. Hand and foot fractures have many accompanying injuries that require attention during diagnosis and treatment. Doctors should formulate accident protection measures for children of different ages, strengthen safety education, and reduce the occurrence of accidental injuries.PMID:38589862 | DOI:10.1186/s12891-024-07407-z (Source: Cancer Control)

Radiation doses received by major organs at risk in children and young adolescents treated for cancer with external beam radiation therapy: a large-scale study from 12 European countries
CONCLUSION: The detailed dose estimates provide very useful information for former patients or clinicians who have only limited knowledge about radiation therapy protocols or techniques, but who know the type and site of childhood cancer, gender, age and year of treatment. This will allow better prediction of the long-term risk of iatrogenic events and better referral to long-term follow-up clinics.PMID:38582233 | DOI:10.1016/j.ijrobp.2024.03.032 (Source: Health Physics)

Increasing Rates of Human Papillomavirus Catch ‐Up Vaccination at a Sexual and Reproductive Health Clinic: A Quality Improvement Project
DiscussionRates of catch-up HPV vaccination increased significantly following the multicomponent, systems-based intervention. Further iteration of the quality improvement process should examine the sustainability of the interventions and the effects of the intervention on vaccine series completion. Childhood and adolescent cancer in Chile: examining challenges and shaping tomorrow
CONCLUSIONS: Chile has made progress in childhood cancer indicators, particularly in increasing survival, demonstrating its commitment to improving care for children with cancer, and this has been achieved through legislative frameworks, national planning, collaborative partnerships and participation in global initiatives. Despite the progress made, ongoing research, strong policy implementation and multidisciplinary collaborations remain vital to addressing persistent challenges. This study highlights the need to refine health systems, data collection methodologies and global cooperation to ensure optimal care for every c...

Reproductive Concerns and Associated Factors Among Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Survivors in Uganda: A Hospital-Based Cross-Sectional Study
Conclusions: The study shows a strong desire for biological parenthood with very low reproductive counseling among AYA cancer survivors, who remain concerned about their fertility, information needs, and health. This outcome underscores the need to integrate RH services into resource-limited cancer care settings.PMID:38578003 | DOI:10.1089/jayao.2023.0184 (Source: Ann Oncol)

Codelivery of ivermectin and methyl dihydrojasmonate in nanostructured lipid carrier for synergistic antileukemia therapy
Int J Pharm. 2024 Apr 3:124086. doi: 10.1016/j.ijpharm.2024.124086. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTChronic myeloid leukemia is a life-threatening blood-cancer prevalent among children and adolescents. Research for innovative therapeutics combine drug-repurposing, phytotherapeutics and nanodrug-delivery. Ivermectin (Ivn) is a potent anthelmintic, repurposed for antileukemic-activity. However, Ivn exerts off-target toxicity. Methyl-dihydrojasmonate (MJ) is a phytochemical of known antileukemic potential. Herein, we developed for the first-time Ivn/MJ-coloaded nanostructured-lipid-carrier (Ivn@MJ-NLC) for leveraging the antile...
