Current and future genomic applications for surgeons
Ann R Coll Surg Engl. 2024 Apr;106(4):321-328. doi: 10.1308/rcsann.2024.0031.ABSTRACTGenomics is a crucial part of managing surgical disease. This review focuses on some of the genomic advances that are available now and looks to the future of their application in surgical practice. Whole-genome sequencing enables unbiased coverage across the entire human genome of approximately three billion base pairs. Newer technologies, such as those that permit long-read sequence analysis, provide additional information in longer phased fragment and base pair epigenomic (methylomic) data. Whole-genome sequencing is currently available...

Ewing's sarcoma in adolescents and adults - 10-year experience from a tertiary cancer center in India
CONCLUSION: Treatment of EWS requires a multidisciplinary approach with radical surgery and/or radiation to control local disease and multiagent chemotherapy to control systemic disease. Long-term follow-up is essential because of disease relapse and treatment-related complications.PMID:38554302 | DOI:10.4103/jcrt.jcrt_775_22 (Source: Cell Research)

Packer Javad Nazarian Pediatric cancers are the leading cause of disease-related deaths in children and adolescents. Most of these tumors are difficult to treat and have poor overall survival. Concerns have also been raised about drug toxicity and long-term detrimental side effects of therapies. In this review, we discuss the advantages and unique attribute...

IJERPH, Vol. 21, Pages 424: A Needs Assessment Approach for Adolescent and Young Adult Sexual and Gender Diverse Cancer Survivors
Charles Kamen Sexual and gender diverse (SGD) adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer survivors are an increasing and vulnerable group with unique needs that often remain unmet in the healthcare system. This paper describes the conceptualization and development of a community-based organization dedicated to serving SGD AYAs, in addition to reporting on the results of a community-led needs assessment. A total of 56 SGD AYA community members completed the online survey. Most participants were between the ages of 26 to 33, identified as white, cisgender, bisexual women, and had hematologic malignancies. Identified unmet n...

A Pilot of a Telehealth-Hospice Transition Intervention for Children and Young Adults with Cancer
Telehealth can improve care for patients with progressive cancer enrolling in hospice. Coordinated telehealth visits (patient/family-hospital-hospice) may improve communication, satisfaction with and interdisciplinary hospice collaboration. This pilot examines the impact of three coordinated telehealth visits on these outcomes. (Source: Journal of Pain and Symptom Management)

Trends in Adolescent Suicide by Method in the US, 1999-2020
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Suicide rates increased across all methods from 1999 to 2020. Differences were noted by sex, age, and race and ethnicity. Increasing suicide rates among racial and ethnic minoritized youth are especially concerning, and effective prevention strategies are urgently needed.PMID:38551558 | DOI:10.1001/jamanetworkopen.2024.4427 (Source: Cancer Control)

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1332: The Emotional Impact of a Cancer Diagnosis: A Qualitative Study of Adolescent and Young Adult Experience
ddin Dan P. Stark The biographical disruption that occurs in adolescents and young adults following a cancer diagnosis can affect various important psychosocial domains including relationships with family and friends, sexual development, vocational and educational trajectories, and physical and emotional wellbeing. While there is evidence of the physical impact of cancer during this period, less is known about the impact on emotional wellbeing and especially on the barriers for young people accessing help and support. We aimed to obtain a more in-depth understanding of young people’s experiences of thei...

Quantity of cigarettes smoked when co-used with alcohol and cannabis: Consideration of different definitions of co-use based on daily diary data
CONCLUSIONS: Compared to days with cigarette smoking only, more cigarettes are smoked on days when cigarettes are co-used with alcohol or cannabis on the same occasion, while the same is not true for days with co-use on different occasions. Conflating different definitions of co-use may impact findings on associations between co-use and smoking behavior.PMID:38547786 | DOI:10.1016/j.drugalcdep.2024.111264 (Source: Cancer Control)

Who gets to die at home? Race and disease-related cause of death impacts young adults place of death
Commentary on: Gustafson CM, Higgins M, Wood KA, Song MK. Place of death for young adults with chronic illness. Nurs Res. 2023 Jul 11. doi: 10.1097/NNR.0000000000000681. Epub ahead of print. Implications for practice and research Clinicians must communicate with young adults (YAs) throughout their disease course about end-of-life care preferences, including place-of-death. Future research must explore YAs’ preferences for place-of-death. Context Young adults (YAs) with serious illnesses report wanting choices in their end-of-life care.1–3 Where YAs would prefer to die is highly personal, though some studies hav...

Adapting an Adolescent and Young Adult Program Housed in a Quaternary Cancer Centre to a Regional Cancer Centre: Creating Equitable Access to Developmentally Tailored Support
Curr Oncol. 2024 Feb 27;31(3):1266-1277. doi: 10.3390/curroncol31030095.ABSTRACTAdolescents and young adults (AYAs) with cancer, representing those between 15 and 39 years of age, face distinctive challenges balancing their life stage with the physical, emotional, and social impacts of a cancer diagnosis. These challenges include fertility concerns, disruptions to educational and occupational pursuits, issues related to body image and sexual health, and the need for age-appropriate psychosocial support within their communities. The Princess Margaret Cancer Centre (PM), a quaternary care center, established a specialized AY...

The late effects of haematopoietic stem cell transplants in paediatric patients: a 25 year review
CONCLUSIONS: We confirm gonadal dysfunction, multiple endocrine and metabolic abnormalities, thyroid cancer and SMNs, as common sequelae of HSCT, and identify gaps in management - particularly the need for informed fertility counselling and pretreatment fertility preservation, evaluation and management of bone health, and underline need for early lifestyle modification, long-term surveillance, and prospective planned studies aimed at reducing complication risk.PMID:38534046 | DOI:10.1210/clinem/dgae196 (Source: The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism)
