14. The Effect of Race on Pediatric Ovarian Mass Surgical Management
While ovarian masses are common in the pediatric population, malignancy is not. Accordingly, ovarian sparing surgery is the recommended treatment modality for benign ovarian masses in this population. Current literature demonstrates that rates of ovarian sparing surgery differ greatly between hospital systems and surgical sub-specialties. In the adult literature, disparities in rates of fertility sparing surgery exist with women of lower socioeconomic status more likely to undergo hysterectomy for low grade gynecologic cancers compared to their higher socioeconomic status counterparts.
