Distribution of copper in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans using green turtles (Chelonia mydas) as a bioindicator
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2024 Apr 20. doi: 10.1007/s11356-024-33366-y. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMarine pollution by trace elements is a global concern due to potential toxicity to species and ecosystems. Copper is a fundamental trace element for many organisms; however, it becomes toxic at certain concentrations. The green turtle (Chelonia mydas) is a good sentinel species, due to its circumglobal distribution, long life cycle, coastal habits when juvenile, and is subject to environmental pollution. Quantifying and comparing copper levels makes it possible to understand the availability of this trace element in nat...

Genes, Vol. 15, Pages 516: Syndromic Retinitis Pigmentosa: A 15-Patient Study
This study reviewed the clinical data of 15 patients with syndromic retinitis pigmentosa from a Rare Disease Reference Center in Brazil and the results of their next-generation sequencing tests. Five males and ten females participated, with the mean ages for ocular disease onset, fundoscopic diagnosis, and molecular evaluation being 9, 19, and 29 years, respectively. Bardet–Biedl syndrome (n = 5) and Usher syndrome (n = 3) were the most frequent diagnoses, followed by other rare conditions. Among the patients, fourteen completed molecular studies, with three negative results and eleven revealing findings in k...

Association of neutrophil extracellular trap levels with Raynaud's phenomenon, glomerulonephritis and disease index score in SLE patients from Brazil
This study aimed to access possible associations between serum NETs levels with epidemiological, clinical, and serological data from a well-characterized SLE Brazilian patients' cohort. NET levels were evaluated in one hundred seventy serum samples of patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) using an Immunoassay. Univariate and multivariate binary logistic regression used clinical patients' data as independent variables. Parametric and non-parametric tests compared log10 base serum NET levels transformed between patients' groups. SLE patients were also dichotomized into "High serum NET levels" and "Low serum NET le...

How much or how often? Examining the screening properties of the DSM cross-cutting symptom measure in a youth population-based sample
CONCLUSIONS: The DSM-XC domains showed transdiagnostic screening properties, providing small but meaningful changes in the likelihood of internalizing disorders in the community, which can be improved by asking frequency of symptoms compared to intensity. The DSM-XC is currently lacking meaningful domains for externalizing disorders.PMID:38639338 | DOI:10.1017/S0033291724000849 (Source: Psychological Medicine)

Combining a transcriptomic approach and a targeted metabolomics approach for deciphering the molecular bases of compatibility phenotype in the snail Biomphalaria glabrata toward Schistosoma mansoni
Acta Trop. 2024 Apr 17:107212. doi: 10.1016/j.actatropica.2024.107212. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBiomphalaria glabrata is a freshwater snail and the obligatory intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni parasite, the etiologic agent of intestinal Schistosomiasis, in South America and Caribbean. Interestingly in such host-parasite interactions, compatibility varies between populations, strains or individuals. This observed compatibility polymorphism is based on a complex molecular-matching-phenotype, the molecular bases of which have been investigated in numerous studies, notably by comparing between different strains or ...

Characterization of the patterns of care, access, and direct cost of systemic lupus erythematosus in Brazil: findings from the Macuna íma study
CONCLUSION: These results allowed access to care patterns, the median cost for patients with SLE in Brazil, and the differences across regions driven by biological, social, and behavioral factors. The cost of SLE provides an updated setting to support the decision-making process across the country.PMID:38641825 | DOI:10.1186/s42358-024-00369-9 (Source: Adv Data)

Knowledge and perception about the welfare and mistreatment of dogs in Brazil
This study sought to a ppraise the factors influencing the Brazilian population’s understanding of dog welfare and mistreatment. The survey questions were adapted from the Animal Welfare Examination Protocol, utilized by veterinarians to evaluate suspected passive abuse cases in dogs. Out of 1377 responses, 1353 were va lid and analyzed. Among the 19 assessed indicators, 15 demonstrated an adequate response rate surpassing 90% of all 1353 responses. However, for three questions related to comfort, a smaller yet notable percentage of responses were only minimally adequate. Moreover, in one question within the comfor t ass...
