First occurrence of feline sporotrichosis in a metropolitan area of Central-West Brazil
This study aimed to report the first occurrence of S. brasiliensis in a cat from the metropolitan area of Goiania city. Cytopathology, mycology, thermal dimorphism and calmodulin gene amplification tests were performed. The mycological and molecular biological diagnoses corresponded to S. brasiliensis. The etiological agent of zoonotic sporotrichosis was detected in the metropolitan area of Goiania city, and therefore there is a risk of the emergence of new cases of cats infected with S. brasiliensis and the occurrence of zoonotic transmission of this fungus.PMID:38597519 | PMC:PMC11000498 | DOI:10.1590/S1678-9946202466019...

Molecular analysis of < em > Gyrovirus galga1 < /em > variants identified from the sera of dogs and cats in China
In this study, the DNA of GyVg1-related gyroviruses in the sera of six dogs and three cats from Central and Eastern China was identified using PCR. Alignment analysis between the nine obtained and reference GyVg1 strains revealed that the genome identity ranged from 99.20% (DOG03 and DOG04 strains) to 96.17% (DOG01 and DOG06 strains). Six recombination events were predicted in multiple strains, including DOG01, DOG05, DOG06, CAT01, CAT02, and CAT03. The predicted major and minor parents of DOG05 came from Brazil. The DOG06 strain is potentially recombined from strains originating from humans and cats, whereas DOG01 is pote...

Post-partum weight retention in Northeastern Brazilian women: a prospective NISAMI cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: Among the hierarchical determinants, proximal factors were interrelated with maternal weight retention, indicating that excessive total weight gain, an inadequate dietary intake pattern, and the absence of exclusive maternal breastfeeding in the first month of life work as dampeners of the return to pre-gestational weight. Prepartum and post-partum care interventions can contribute to reducing excess weight in women.PMID:38597530 | PMC:PMC11000731 | DOI:10.1590/1516-3180.2023.0084.R1.010623 (Source: Sao Paulo Medical Journal)

Assessing the Time Evolution of COVID-19 Effective Reproduction Number in Brazil
An Acad Bras Cienc. 2024 Apr 5;96(1):e20221050. doi: 10.1590/0001-3765202420221050. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTIn this paper, we use a Bayesian method to estimate the effective reproduction number ( R ( t ) ), in the context of monitoring the time evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil at different geographic levels. The focus of this study is to investigate the similarities between the trends in the evolution of such indicators at different subnational levels with the trends observed nationally. The underlying question addressed is whether national surveillance of such variables is enough to provide a picture of the e...

Can species guilds act as hubs for energy transfer in macrophyte meadows of Amazonian floodplain lakes?
An Acad Bras Cienc. 2024 Apr 5;96(1):e20230327. doi: 10.1590/0001-3765202420230327. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTAquatic macrophytes are the main autochthonous component of primary production in the Amazon Basin. Floating meadows of these plants support habitats with highly diverse animal communities. Fishes inhabiting these habitats have been assumed to use a broad range of food items and compose a particular food web. We employed carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) stable isotope analysis to draw the trophic structure of these habitats and to trace the energy flow by its trophic levels. Fishes and other animals from 18 indep...

Reactive oxygen species impair Na+ transport and renal components of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system after paraquat poisoning
This study evaluated how ROS acutely influences Na+-transporting ATPases and the renal RAAS. Adult male Wistar rats received paraquat (20 mg/kg; ip). After 24 h, we observed body weight loss and elevation of urinary flow and serum creatinine. In the renal cortex, paraquat increased ROS levels, NADPH oxidase and (Na++K+)ATPase activities, angiotensin II-type 1 receptors, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and interleukin-6. In the medulla, paraquat increased ROS levels and NADPH oxidase activity but inhibited (Na++K+)ATPase. Paraquat induced opposite effects on the ouabain-resistant Na+-ATPase in the cortex (decrease) and m...
