Avoidable COVID-19-related deaths and hospitalizations in Brazil, 2020-2023
CONCLUSIONS: PLPE reduction in 2023 was likely caused by low vaccine uptake. The disease burden could have been much lower had the vaccination started earlier and had the vaccine uptake not dropped so sharply in 2023.PMID:38631953 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2024.04.041 (Source: Vaccine)

Analysis of causal relations between vaccine hesitancy for COVID-19 vaccines and ideological orientations in Brazil
This article presents a causal inference analysis of vaccine hesitancy for Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines based on socio-demographic data obtained via questionnaires applied to a sample of the Brazilian population. This data includes the respondents' political preferences, age group, education, salary range, country region, sex, believing fake news, vaccine confidence, and intention to get the COVID-19 vaccine. The research created a causal graph using these variables, seeking to answer questions about the probability of people getting vaccinated. The results of this research corroborate findings observed in ...

Even worse for Black girls: the longitudinal association of racial bullying with the initiation of alcohol and tobacco use
Am J Epidemiol. 2024 Apr 15:kwae047. doi: 10.1093/aje/kwae047. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe used Poisson's linear regression to examine the association between racial bullying (RB) and the initiation of alcohol and tobacco uses after nine months. Two cluster randomized controlled trials were conducted in 2019 with fifth (girls: 50.0%; 10 years old: 82.0%; White: 36.8%; Black: 58.7%; Others: 4.5%) and seventh graders (girls: 49.5%; 12 years old: 78.1%; White: 33.2%; Black: 60.4%; Others: 6.4%) from 30 public schools in the municipality of São Paulo, Brazil. We restricted our analyzes on two subsets of students in each ...

Attenuation photochemical potential of Pontal of Paranapanema river waters (Brazil) from agrochemicals: geographical and temporal assessment
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2024 Apr 17. doi: 10.1007/s11356-024-33358-y. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTKnowledge of the environmental photochemical fate of pesticides is essential to assess their potential impacts. However, there are few studies in the literature focused on the photochemical attenuation of micropollutants in Brazilian rivers. In this context, this study characterized the surface waters of the Pontal of Paranapanema region (region which concentrates more than 80% of Brazilian sugarcane cultivations), in order to determine its photochemical attenuation potential against micropollutants in different seasons....

Nitrospirillum viridazoti sp. nov., an Efficient Nitrogen-Fixing Species Isolated from Grasses
Curr Microbiol. 2024 Apr 17;81(6):144. doi: 10.1007/s00284-024-03665-1.ABSTRACTA group of Gram-negative plant-associated diazotrophic bacteria belonging to the genus Nitrospirillum was investigated, including both previously characterized and newly isolated strains from diverse regions and biomes, predominantly in Brazil. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA and recA genes revealed the formation of a distinct clade consisting of thirteen strains, separate from the formally recognized species N. amazonense (the closest species) and N. iridis. Comprehensive taxonomic analyses using the whole genomes of four strains (BR 11140T =...

Risk factors and mortality of candidemia in a children's public hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil
This study aimed to estimate the incidence and risk factors associated with mortality in candidemia cases occurring in a public children's hospital in Ribeirao Preto, Brazil. It is a retrospective transversal study. Every patient under the age of 18 admitted to the study facility from January 1, 2013, to December 31, 2019, was considered potentially eligible to be included if they had candidemia. We collected clinical data from medical records. We included 113 blood cultures yielding positive results for Candida. The incidence rate was 2.12 per 1000 admissions. The most common Candida species was Candida parapsilosis. Sept...

Intervention diversity predicts social rehabilitation indicators at discharge in Therapeutic Communities
The Therapeutic Community Model narrows the gap in substance use disorder's network of assistance in Brazil by offering residential treatment to socially vulnerable populations. Due to a historical lack of evidence-based approaches, the government has established treatment guidelines and has been trying to implement training and monitoring methods. Occurrence of area postrema syndrome during follow-up: phenotype and influence over NMOSD activity in LATAM in real-world settings
ConclusionsOur findings indicate that 18.3% of NMOSD patients developed APS during the follow-up period, with most patients fulfilling criteria for severe APS. The inflammatory activity decreased after the onset of APS compared to the previous year. (Source: Journal of Neurology)

Cost of SARS-CoV-2 self-test distribution programmes by different modalities: a micro-costing study in five countries (Brazil, Georgia, Malaysia, Ethiopia and the Philippines)
Conclusions Our results indicate that it is likely to cost between $2.44 and $12.78 per test to distribute COVID-19 self-tests across common settings in five heterogeneous countries. Cost-effectiveness analyses using these results will allow policymakers to make informed decisions on optimally scaling up COVID-19 self-test distribution programmes across diverse settings and evolving needs. Can predictive factors determine the time to treatment initiation for oral and oropharyngeal cancer? A classification and regression tree analysis
by D ébora Rosana Alves Braga Silva Montagnoli, Vitória Ferreira Leite, Yasmim Silva Godoy, Vitória Marçolla Lafetá, Edmilson Antônio Pereira Junior, Akhilanand Chaurasia, Maria Cássia Ferreira Aguiar, Mauro Henrique Nogueira Guimarães Abreu, Renata Castro Martins This ecological study aimed to identify the factors with the greatest power to discriminate the proportion of oral and oropharyngeal cancer (OOC) records with time to treatment initiation (TTI) within 30 days of diagnosis in Brazilian municipalities. A descriptive analysis was performed on the var iables grouped into five dimensions related to patient ch...
