Demographic and clinical characteristics of people diagnosed with active sexually transmitted infections among monkeypox cases in Brazil: the 2022 outbreak
Rev Inst Med Trop Sao Paulo. 2024 Apr 5;66:e20. doi: 10.1590/S1678-9946202466020. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTThe worldwide monkeypox (mpox) outbreak in 2022 showed a high frequency of sexually transmitted infections (STI). A cross-sectional study was carried out using secondary data from the Brazilian official mpox surveillance systems. A total of 10,169 mpox cases were identified, with a median age of 32 years. Among them, 92.3% were male at birth and 57.5% were men who have sex with other men (MSM). Approximately 11% were diagnosed with STI, including 5.8% with syphilis and 2.5% with genital herpes. Individuals aged from 2...

First occurrence of feline sporotrichosis in a metropolitan area of Central-West Brazil
This study aimed to report the first occurrence of S. brasiliensis in a cat from the metropolitan area of Goiania city. Cytopathology, mycology, thermal dimorphism and calmodulin gene amplification tests were performed. The mycological and molecular biological diagnoses corresponded to S. brasiliensis. The etiological agent of zoonotic sporotrichosis was detected in the metropolitan area of Goiania city, and therefore there is a risk of the emergence of new cases of cats infected with S. brasiliensis and the occurrence of zoonotic transmission of this fungus.PMID:38597519 | PMC:PMC11000498 | DOI:10.1590/S1678-9946202466019...

Social support and suicidality during the COVID-19 pandemic among Brazilian healthcare workers: a longitudinal assessment of an online repeated cross-sectional survey
CONCLUSION: Social support is associated with a lower chance of suicidality among HCWs, a protective role that is probably more evident for suicidal behavior.PMID:38598451 | DOI:10.47626/1516-4446-2023-3466 (Source: Revista Brasileira de Psiquiatria)

Post-partum weight retention in Northeastern Brazilian women: a prospective NISAMI cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: Among the hierarchical determinants, proximal factors were interrelated with maternal weight retention, indicating that excessive total weight gain, an inadequate dietary intake pattern, and the absence of exclusive maternal breastfeeding in the first month of life work as dampeners of the return to pre-gestational weight. Prepartum and post-partum care interventions can contribute to reducing excess weight in women.PMID:38597530 | PMC:PMC11000731 | DOI:10.1590/1516-3180.2023.0084.R1.010623 (Source: Sao Paulo Medical Journal)

The effect of urbanization on species composition and trophic guilds of bats (Mammalia, Chiroptera) in the Brazilian Savanna
Braz J Biol. 2024 Apr 8;84:e275828. doi: 10.1590/1519-6984.275828. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTUrban environments present less environmental heterogeneity in relation to the natural ones, affecting the biodiversity of bats and the ecological processes in which they participate. In this way, we will identify how urbanization influences the structure of bat communities in the municipality of Goiânia, Goiás, Brazil. We compared species composition, guilds and bat richness in a gradient that crossed urban, semi-urban and natural areas in the municipality of Goiânia, contained in the Cerrado biome. We captured a total of 775 ba...

Sugarcane productivity and economic viability in response to planting density
Braz J Biol. 2024 Apr 5;84:e279536. doi: 10.1590/1519-6984.279536. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTPlanting with higher density in sugarcane is one of the practices used to overcome low productivity. However, this planting material is equivalent to 25% of the total cost of production, being one of the main expenses for cultivation. In this sense, the present work aims to evaluate the productivity and economic viability of sugarcane as a function of planting density. The experiment was carried out at Usina Monte Alegre in the municipality of Mamanguape, Paraíba, Brazil, from March 2021 to January 2022 with the variety RB92579. Se...

Transition between peritoneal dialysis modalities: Impact on blood pressure levels and drug prescription in a national multicentric cohort
CONCLUSIONS: Transition between PD modalities seems to directly impact on BP levels. Further studies are needed to confirm if switching to APD could be an effective treatment for uncontrolled hypertension among CAPD patients.PMID:38596899 | DOI:10.1177/08968608241240566 (Source: Peritoneal Dialysis International)

Assessing the Time Evolution of COVID-19 Effective Reproduction Number in Brazil
An Acad Bras Cienc. 2024 Apr 5;96(1):e20221050. doi: 10.1590/0001-3765202420221050. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTIn this paper, we use a Bayesian method to estimate the effective reproduction number ( R ( t ) ), in the context of monitoring the time evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil at different geographic levels. The focus of this study is to investigate the similarities between the trends in the evolution of such indicators at different subnational levels with the trends observed nationally. The underlying question addressed is whether national surveillance of such variables is enough to provide a picture of the e...

Can species guilds act as hubs for energy transfer in macrophyte meadows of Amazonian floodplain lakes?
An Acad Bras Cienc. 2024 Apr 5;96(1):e20230327. doi: 10.1590/0001-3765202420230327. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTAquatic macrophytes are the main autochthonous component of primary production in the Amazon Basin. Floating meadows of these plants support habitats with highly diverse animal communities. Fishes inhabiting these habitats have been assumed to use a broad range of food items and compose a particular food web. We employed carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) stable isotope analysis to draw the trophic structure of these habitats and to trace the energy flow by its trophic levels. Fishes and other animals from 18 indep...

Taxonomic study of Hymenochaetaceae species (Agaricomycetes, Basidiomycota) in the municipalities of Tom é-Açu and Bujaru, Pará, Brazil
An Acad Bras Cienc. 2024 Apr 5;96(suppl 1):e20230338. doi: 10.1590/0001-3765202420230338. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTThe family Hymenochaetaceae includes a diversity of 893 species described around the world. Its representatives are known by their usually rusty colored basidiomes with a poroid hymenial surface, hydnoid or smooth, woody consistency, and wide morphological variation regarding the arrangement on the substrate. They behave as saprophytic, parasitic, ectomycorrhizal and play a fundamental role in the decomposition of wood in forest ecosystems. In the Brazilian Amazonia region, approximately 40 species of Hymenoch...

Effect of seasonality and estuarine waters on the phytoplankton of the Guam á River (Belém, Amazon, Brazil)
This study aimed to analyze the application of the Phytoplankton Community Index-PCI and Functional Groups-FG in determining the water quality of the Guamá River (Pará, Amazônia, Brazil). Samplings occurred monthly for analyses of phytoplankton and physical and chemical parameters, for two years, at the station where water was collected for human supply consumption. Seasonality influenced electrical conductivity, total suspended solids, dissolved oxygen, transparency, winds, true color, and N-ammoniacal. The ebb tide showed high turbidity and suspended solids. The density varied seasonally with the highest values occurr...
